The world's oldest railway station has been added to the Heritage at Risk Register 2024

Heighington station lies in a derelict state beside the original Stockton and Darlington Railway line. Earlier this year, the Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway launched a campaign to save the station.

It is estimated that £500,000 is needed to buy and stabilise it so that it is not an embarrassing eyesore during the railway’s 200th anniversary next year.

Today (Thursday, November 14), Historic England has revealed its Heritage at Risk Register 2024, which shows that Heighington station is one of six sites in the North East added to the register this year.

This morning I ran Five Arches parkrun in Radstock, Somerset.

It runs along a bit of the old Somerset and Dorset railway trackbed and incorporates this fine five arch viaduct into the course

And a signal post still extant...

My take on that is how much the rolling stack carriages etc. have improved since I used to make regular journeys.
When I returned from Egypt I was stationed at South Benfleet so trips to and from home meant Benfleet to Fenchurch Street, through to Euston and on then to Birmingham New Street, the trains were cold and filthy dirty, when you sat down clouds of acrid dust rose from the seats.
