Sorry for wandering off topic Mick! I'm glad this forum allows for a "wandering brief" on/off topics - I think it's the conversations that matters most, rather than staying within the heading :)

Technology, or rather software developments with computers (and I must be honest, I'm talking Windows. Much as I'm sure Macs and Linux and many others knock Microsoft out the park, the fact is work will always use Windows, so my enthusiasm for learning another system is low - I suspect knowing I could do something easily in a non-Windows environment (at home) is likely to only increase my frustrations! So, for the moment, I'm not bothering to investigate)

I'm reasonably confident on the PC and indeed end up "problem solving" others problems on Office at work pretty often! But I have to say I think I'm a bit of a luddite in other ways - I cannot think of much I use day to day on the PC that has fundamentally improved since, say Windows XP. That, to me, "just worked" and recent developments such as Office 365 and SharePoint seem to offer nothing but reduced performance!

Thankfully work again dictates I use these new technologies, and in time I've got used to regularly bring told I need to stop doing whatever I was doing for yet another update........

Yep, agreed Matt. Windows does just about what we need it to without and inordinate amount of fuss or needing deep involvement. As the old saying goes 'it does what it says on the tin'. Not 100% perfectly but well enough for our needs...

I have no problem with drifting away from the topic Matt, it was just that I hadn't actually got another view on the original proposition! :-D

As for operating systems I agree about Windows doing all I need quite proficiently but in absolute honesty I was happy with Windows 3.1 having made the basic transition from single screen text entry of DOS to multiple screen text and image support. The 'enhancements' since then through 95, XP, Vista etc have for me largely been 'because we can' developments basically produced to get people to spend more money!! Oh what a surprise. :-D

I think 3.11 is as far back as I can recall using - on PCs at school. I do recall that clicking "bold" then typing produced .... Nothing.... Then a raft of characters subsequently arrived!

I remember delayed buffering very well Matt from the very early days. Mind you the keyboards were so chunky that the delay was not so surprising as it probably took longer to actually press a key down! :-D Going on from my comment about Microsoft introducing enhancements over the years for principally financial reasons it's a good job they didn't invent the wheel!! :rofl2:

I think "mechanical keyboards" are highly regarded in the PC gaming world nowadays.

Look at the prices of those reviewed here (sit down first!)

Windows is the Ford Escort/Focus of operating systems. It does what you need.

Linux is the Xantia.

MacOs is the XM.

MattBLancs wrote: 18 Apr 2025, 19:47 Only just spotted this topic - an interesting discussion. Didn't know there was ABS on bikes!
It's been on top end bikes for decades now, but only on average bikes since 2012 or so. It's the one aid that must have saved thousands of lives. The difference it makes when swerving whilst braking hard, or in the wet is amazing. When I got my BMW F800R with it, I spent an hour in a deserted car park in Winnersh messing about in the rain with it.

Never actually got it to activate on the road in two years of owning it.
