If it is blocked you may hear a hiss and feel a release of pressure as you remove the fuel cap... Else try running with a modified cap with small holes bored into it

Something else I'd do no is rig up a small lamp to the stop solenoid connection to see if the power to it disappears when the stall happens; have the lamp visible from your driving position...

Yes. My latest post is about cleaning it and you did mention it before. It's just taken me 6 weeks to find the time to do it! It was only a half hour job. Could easily be done in 10 minutes.

I think this will have cured it or I'm hoping at least. My next line of attack was to see if I could rig up a MM but your idea is much better. If I could find a suitable fitting, I have some 12V 1.5W LED G4 bulbs for surface mount then I presumably take one lead to earth and the other to a ring tag and firmly attach to stop solenoid supply. I suppose it would take about 3 metres of cable but then the cable presumably has to just come in through the door unless there is a location in the bulkhead it could come through.

The thing I was going to do was if it happened again, simply remove plunger and spring from stop solenoid and manual stop engine everytime to rule the solenoid or wiring to it out.

When my fuel filter was blocked on my HDi engine, I lost power at high speed and fast acceleration. If you let the diesel go low regularly then all that crap gets sucked up, so I would go for a fuel filter change. Even if its not that, it should be due for one right now. Its been over 12 years since I got rid of my Xantia, but i'm sure the filter was easy to get at. I remember when getting my car MOTed, the tester taking the fuel filter out and pouring redex into it for the purpose of getting my car through the emissions.

As for the microbe that live in diesel, I heard that every now and then after you have filled up your tank with diesel put a few litre's of unleaded in with the diesel to kill those little f*ck*rs. I don't know if this is still the case (or was even ever the case).

I also ran clean cooking oil at the time as this was 35p cheap a litre than diesel. AAMOF when I traded the Xantia in, I put 2 litre's of sunflower oil in as the tank was empty and I wasn't going to put 5 litre's of diesel in. The car ran fine altho when I got to Arnold Clark there was a big line of people asking me for a bag of chips
