Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
I must say I too was shocked by the Xantia Ncap figure; it feels quite a solid drive. I often think that in a head to head, perhaps a much heavier car(vehicle) would come off better? What if a Zant hit a "Smart" I wonder

It's meant to. That's what crumple zones are for....helps stops the person inside taking a big hit by dispersing energy..falling-out-with-my-car wrote:I had a minor collision in my xantia last year and even at very slow speed
it did quite a bit of damage

Perhaps Citroen were relying on the wedge shaped extremely heavy bonnet to propel anything higher up over the roof?harryp wrote:I must say I too was shocked by the Xantia Ncap figure; it feels quite a solid drive. a smart car would simply be ejected over the car.

It did quite a bit of damage on purpose... Crumple zones... They absorbed the shock before your body did...falling-out-with-my-car wrote:I had a minor collision in my xantia last year and even at very slow speed
it did quite a bit of damage I think my 2cv would have faired better because of the chassis the 2cv was crash tested rigorously.
The 2CV would likely not have crumpled so remarkably but the chances are you'd have absorbed much more of the impact.

Separate chassis are not good as the bodywork shears off the top of them, they have a tendency to dive under the obstacle enhancing the damage to the body. They also have a tenancy to allow the engine/drive train to separate and move backwards.

Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
Smart for two would come off much better from what I've seen, Fifth Gear (I think) crash tested one into a concrete barrier at 80mph and it's surprising how well it stood up to the impact. OK the lack of material to crumple meant that the driver would still likely be half dead at best, but the doors were still able to open and close & I don't think the pedals/dash etc had moved much so the safety cell is solid enough. I think they do rely more on the crumple zones of other cars though to keep the occupants safer...harryp wrote: What if a Zant hit a "Smart" I wonder
A for2's occupants would likely fare better in a head-on Vs. a Xantia than if it was hit by a 2cv...

Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
Note, the "test" is on a solid block at 90degrees.
The damage is due to "tip up" which shows that no "dive" is allowed by the test of the chassis.
It may be extream but you can see the "tear line" in this vid

No way a 2cv would be stronger than a Xantia..
Also, no AirBags
Also weaker Engine mounts at bumper height of the Xantia (the strongest part)

There's no way a 2cv is stronger or safer than a Xantia. I've owned and crashed both.
I've also seen the results of low-speed impacts with immovable objects of similar dimensions on both. 2CV was completely written off, Xantia needed a new wing, bonnet and bumper.

This totally disprovex the theory I held on car mass
It's actually fascinating in an aweful way.

Re: RE: Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
I never suggested the 2cv was stronger than a Xantia, please re-read my post lol I said a Smart for2 would fare better against a Xantia than against a 2cv (based on the smart having an immensely strong safety cell but little to no crumple zone, therefore it would not have as hard a stop hitting a car with a large crumple zone like the Xant' than if it hit something with a separate chassis that would effectively "battering ram" into the solid shell of the Smart car... Do you disagree with that, or did you read me wrong?mickeymoon wrote:And nonsense!harryp wrote:That is scareyA for2's occupants would likely fare better in a head-on Vs. a Xantia than if it was hit by a 2cv...

Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
I still disagree because a 2CV is made out of tinfoil and a Smart would simply destroy it. If the concrete barrier didn't break a Smart, there is no way a 2CV would stand up to one..

Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
I'm not saying the 2cv would survive though, just that the occupants of the smart would be less likely to be injured by a Xantia than a 2cv owing to the crumple zone or lack thereof

Re: Euro NCAP rating on Xantia shock!
I'm also sceptical of Tiff and VBH's claim in the Smart car / concrete / Corsa video that the car occupants would be almost certainly dead. It's not uncommon for racing drivers past and present to have suffered far higher accident g-forces, even in the days before HANS devices and simply walked away..
