Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
The 207 is nowhere near as good as the 205 but it's an order of magnitude better than the 206 in my opinion...
I've had deep experience of all the 2 series from the 5 on now. I'm keen to try a 208. They say it's very close to the 205 so on that basis it must be good. Looks OK for a modern too... The 207 looks OK from most angles but has quite a chunky arse...
The 207 is definitely worth a look. Early low-spec 1.4 ET3-engined ones with 'issues' (like mine!)can be got very cheaply now...

Ooh, I don't know Jim. I like my 207. I find it a lot better built than a 205 (I owned a white 1.9 GTi back in 1998!) and not as harsh riding. I don't know what it would be like with an extra 30bhp but to me, the handling is a lot safer but still as lively as a 205 was. I would be sorely tempted by a 150 or 180 bhp one but they have that troublesome THP motor in and I can do without that hassle.

In find the handling safe enough but I don't care for the over-assisted power steering - it makes the steering feel very 'dead' to me...
Compared to the 205 (the non-GTi versions) the ride is a bit jittery and bouncy on some surfaces and nowhere near as good. Seats in mine are awful. They are very hard and unforgiving but that may be more me and being devoid of any of my own padding in the nether regions and too light to feel any movement in the seats.
I've now put the car into daily use for a few weeks and touch wood, all has been good...
I don't trust it and until a good few thousand miles have been covered I won't be at all convinced I've fixed it...

Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
Driving a car with electrical issues which you dont trust is "fun" and not in a good way. I had one like that once and it was pure luck that found the cause. The engine was running with the air box and everything else removed, touched a wire going into a sensor which i dont know what the sensor did and engine stopped. One connector a squeeze with a pliers and a rub with emery paper and it was cured. That was after a main stealer replacing lots of parts at a cost to myself trying to fix it!

Have you pushed it hard Jim? I think the steering is very light around town, which I don't mind at all, but I've noticed on my early morning/late night cross-country blats to work that it gets a lot heavier at speed - variable assistance, I gather. Much better when going "fast".
I must come and have a drive of yours, and you can have a do in mine to see if there's any difference. Again, unlike you, I find the seats, especially the driver's seat, very comfortable indeed. I am however not far off twice your weight, and it fits me like a glove, and the gear lever falls perfectly to hand for me. I've also installed a cable to allow me to plug an mp3 player/phone into the standard RD4 headunit. I'm quietly impressed by it. I'd be a lot more impressed if I could work out how to clean the alternator of oil without removing it. The other week, I asked the MOT man about the oil leak which has been mentioned on all previous MOTs but he didn't. His response "I'd be more concerned about one of those if it didn't leak. Head gasket, left hand side as you look at it, make sure you clean it off now and again or the alternator will fail"
I've come to the conclusion, having sat in one earlier, that a 208 might well be the only modern French car that I'd buy now.

I'd like that... Mine's a base model so it would be good to experience a more up-market model and see if the seats are comfier to me...mickeymoon wrote:I must come and have a drive of yours, and you can have a do in mine to see if there's any difference.

As I have said in your new topic on the subject
I too would be interested in trying one.

I suspect that may be vaguely true, or at least not in the most economical manner for this engine. It took Adriana ages to get the hang of itHell Razor5543 wrote:You are not driving her fast enough!

Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
It was my ex that drove ours the most, and her driving style was accelerate hard on the straights to 75 and brake hard in the corners to 35. I couldnt sit beside her, it caused massive rows with her claiming she was a goog driver cos she had never had a crash. Just everyone else around her crashing out of frustration lol

I tried out a different driving style yesterday blasting all round Milton Keynes in it with her ex-owner riding shotgun...
I was driving it like I stole it and fuel went even faster!!!
I must admit the 207 is fun around the roundabouts

Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
Our Escort is like that, drive sensibly/sympathetically and it struggles in the late 20s but show it a good thrashing and somehow it climbs to over 40... Go figure...
Is the economy actually bad for a 207 or just perceived bad coming from an XUD? if it's really not up to scratch check what the CTS is showing versus an infra-red thermometer on the top hose and also look at how well the upstream O2 sensor is performing. Not sure how many miles down you are now without a fault, but could it also still be "learning" how far it can push the fuelling/how you tend to drive it?

Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
That's a good point about the CTS
These past couple of days I've really been driving it like I stole it and I'm really enjoying it - it's great fun and the little car really comes alive as the tacho needle buries itself in the red
As different to driving an XUD Xantia as you can get but not far off the fun you can have in an Activa though
I noticed I was driving particularly aggressively this morning after my parkrun. I must have been very high on endorphins...

Re: 207 Randomly Cuts Out...
A former colleague used to have a Series 1 Jaguar XJS V12. Driven around town it was more GPM than MPG, but at high motorway speeds the fuel gauge apparently stopped working, as it stopped moving.

Yes I feel the same with the Escort again, it's the complete opposite of how one would drive even the little 1.4HDi to get the best of both engines. If the fuelling/CTS are all good it may just need the cobwebs blowing away, and as the engine's character seems conducive to the heavy footed style of driving then might as well just enjoy it. Surely can't be that good to drive though, unless it's handling is as far removed from the 206 as I perceived it would have been from the Activa?
