Was the Serena the skinny minibus type thing? I used one of them to drive a load of work party goers into London many years ago. Even with no caravan on it was so thirsty I thought it was faulty!

Some 25 or more years ago I ran a Vauxhall VX2300 automatic estate. I was used to getting 22 - 24 mpg out of it - maybe even 28mpg on sun. One year I towed a caravan down to France (950 miles) and I didn't even make it out of England before I had to fill the tank up again. I later worked out that I was getting about 16mpg. Damn near broke me.

It was this poor economy that was a deciding factor for going diesel for me. I worked out that for the cost of two journeys to France and back in the VX2300 I could make three in the Austin Montego turbodiesel estate that I eventually bought. Later on I began to appreciate diesel's other benefits such as the flexibility to pull at low revs in gear, the strong in gear acceleration without changing down and the fact that it was quieter at speed than petrol because it was revving much slower.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened.

I had a Nissan Serena and towed a big caravan with it. It was only a 1.6 petrol. I didn't bother about fuel as I used a credit card that I only paid 1/4 of [emoji4] The quickest I used a tank of fuel was in a sdi rover v8auto. Filled up at home, attached caravan got to Dundee 110 miles later and on the red line. I can't remember how much fuel it took but we only went to Edinburgh when we were going to be heading to SE England [emoji13]

Using my 90 bhp S2 Xantia estate for work, as a courier, delivering small parcels in South London, I was getting 35 mpg.I've just changed to a Peugeot Partner 1.6 Diesel thing. That returns 35 mpg. My BX 1.7 td used to return 39 mpg, all stop/start city driving. Progress huh? Best thing though, I wiped my finger around the inside of the Partners exhaust and, Spotlessly clean. 1000 mls on the clock now.
