Fully agree that Canon are the best domestic printer for photo's. The just don't work with Linux, Canon will not release the engineering details or the drivers.DickieG wrote:My Canon does A3+, I bought it earlier this year when Canon were doing a £100 cashback offer, a bit of a bargain at the time.Xac wrote:Yes Canon's are lovely for photos, a friend of mine has an A3+ one that I have access to should I wish
They do have Linux drivers, one of their top software engineers wrote them, but they are adamant about not releasing them under any circumstances.
So they have lost a sale - I'm sure they would be gutted if they knew

What is Linux? I've just looked on their website and it looked as clear as mud.

Right, thanks for that Steve, do you have an English conversion?myglaren wrote:Seriously?DickieG wrote:What is Linux? I've just looked on their website and it looked as clear as mud.
There is more than one "Linux" and technically it is GNU/Linux, but still.
I (currently) use Ubuntu but have in the past used SüSe and Linux Mint.
The current MacOS is a variant based on BSD.
Hmm, not too sure about anything called "Ubuntu" experience has told me to beware of any name that begins and ends in vowels, usually = fraud

Re: Computer operating systems
As it is completely free, it would be difficult to operate it fraudulently.
The owner, Mark Shuttleworth, paid for it out of his small change in the early days.
Ubuntu makes no profit. The only money comes from Canonical, the software support company.
In the early days, if you requested a CD, they would send ten as a minimum and ask if you would like more.
Now they limit it to one per customer.
To download any Linux version is completely free. You only pay for the DVD, packaging and documentation.
I paid £23 for SüSe, Five discs and a 400 page manual in a very posh packaging.
It comes with loads of free software including Open Office, or more recently Libre Office.
Tons more to download if you want it.

Re: Computer operating systems
I used to use SuSe too, tried ubuntu, and RedHat, and knopix. Never found one with a GUI that I really liked.
Very good if you want to set up a server, getting reasonable if you want a PC.
Came in very handy with Shani as I was forever rebuilding her computer due to her being crap at using the internet and downloading malware every 5 seconds.
Installing linux put an end to that.
If you just use a computer for browsing and office stuff it's fine, assuming there are linux drivers for your hardware.

Yep, most stuff 'just works'. It detects the hardware on installing the OS and grabs the drivers as it installs.

Re: Computer operating systems
I've got Ubuntu on this laptop at the moment, I do have XP too for the specific stuff (doesn't have enough juice to drive a virtual machine!) The interface kinda just clicked with me as I grew up using Workbench 3.0 on the Amiga.
Linux is basically a more complicated/versatile, less flashy version of the Mac operating system but is free in most circumstances.

Re: Computer operating systems
I'm having a problem with Win 7 when using youtube. Machine is a Lenovo laptop, Win 7 home premium 64 bit, updates upto date.
After watching maybe 10 youtube vids, a message pops up on the player window saying I need to update flash player. First time it happened I did that but the problem still exists. The only way to resume youtube is to close all browser windows (IE9), open again and all is ok, until I've watched maybe another 10 vids or so, then it happens again. I realised early on that many sites do not work with 64 bit IE so I use 32 bit by default.
Any idea's ?

Re: Computer operating systems
First is to confirm that you are running 32Bit when the issue occurs. Despite setting it as default Windows has a habbit of opening the 64Bit version, causes us such issues on our terminal server (Windows 2008 64Bit), I wish we could disable IE64 and make my life much easier.
Also make sure your flash is up to date by going to http://www.adobe.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Open TaskManager and see how much memory you're using overall on the performance tab, and then how much each iexplore.exe process is using in the processes tab
