Re: Computer operating systems
Take the drive out of it Steve and slave it to your Linux machine - you can buy a caddy on the bay for about £3. Will read the windoze partition no problem, and likely a lot faster.
I've got our new laptop, but no time to get it out yet and let it download Win10, and then faff with trying to get it to run Ubuntu... might get a chance to let it run the Win 10 thing tonight.

Re: Computer operating systems
Been trying to network it with the Linux desktop without any great success.
Will probably run Ubuntu on it from a dongle if it continues to be intransigent. Or dual-boot maybe.
While I was fiddling around with it last night it said I could reserve a copy of W10 so I clicked the button and it proceeded to download it, then wanted to install it and an EULA came up saying if I was in North America I had to agree to the terms and conditions. As I don't appear to be in the USA I declined and I think it wiped the download out. Ho Hum.
Haven't networked my machines in ages but will give it a shot and perhaps see where I am going wrong - using Windows being the prime possibility.
At least I got the licence code using Belarc Advisor. Also a lot of other stuff I really don't need to know
Pages of it- thought I'd just sent the licence numbers to the printer but it was six pages of bumf.
That is one thing it did with no fuss, use my wireless printer.
It won't use the wife's though, same age, same make, ignores it completely.

Re: Computer operating systems
Just go ahead and upgrade it Steve
You have little to loose... Perhaps first clone the disk using Linux...

Re: Computer operating systems
I'd like to upgrade to Ubuntu but I don't think Laura would be to happy with that.

I'm sure she'd love it Steve... Most do after an initial familiarising exercise...myglaren wrote:I'd like to upgrade to Ubuntu but I don't think Laura would be to happy with that.

Re: Computer operating systems
Lenny (her son) has a Zoostorm laptop that I bought 'bare metal' and installed Ubuntu on and she uses my computers with no problems, he partner has a Macbook so she isn't unfamiliar with it, have no idea why she wants to stick to Windows - she does use a Windows computer at work though.

Re: Computer operating systems
So do I but I find the change to Linux at home refreshing...myglaren wrote:have no idea why she wants to stick to Windows - she does use a Windows computer at work though.
When using Linux you're not reminded at work... Perhaps that's why I'm OK with Win 10 at the moment as it looks nothing like the Windows at work...
I'm finding Win 10 OK but there is absolutely nothing about it that rivals Ubuntu or Fedora in the least.. It's a nice change of scenery though and it's still looking quite competent as an OS...
I'd say Windows is now nearly on par with the best Linux distros...

Re: Computer operating systems
Still messing around with the Tosh.
Ran Ubuntu from a dongle and had all her files shifted to my computers in about ten minutes.
The plan is to upgrade to 10 tomorrow.
Youngest son came to me earlier, his Lenovo has tried and failed to upgrade to 10 and was in a loop of trying to boot and failing, fixing the problem (and failing) - trying to boot again...
Had a poke at it but haven't his password and he's asleep now (s**t worker)
Shift worker! (thankyou forum nanny)
Managed to get it into safe mode and undo the buggeration but that's as far as I can go for now. Might tell him it is beyond repair and put Mint or Ubuntu on it for him

Re: Computer operating systems
You do seem to have some massive problems with it Steve
Hope they're all soon fixed...
I'm still loving Win 10 and I reckon you will when you upgrade...
Also upgraded Office 365 to Office 2016...

Neither are for me Jim, I wouldn't have Windows on any of my computers.

Re: Computer operating systems
Give Win 10 a chance Steve... It's an order of magnitude better than 8...
I won't trust it for critical stuff though and every day use Ubuntu for such things... There remains no substitute for Ubuntu in such areas...
Linux is for serious stuff, Windows is strictly for fun... That's how I use it and I see no great change on the horizon...

Re: Computer operating systems
I just find it overcomplicated to do simple tasks.Took much digging to create an account for my daughter.
I wanted to hide the wife's account rather than delete it, at least temporarily. It is doable but such a faff and the same to unhide it.
I just logged in here with it and it took four minutes to connect, Ubuntu took three seconds and that was slow, usually it is too fast to see.
I just find the whole thing a mess compared to the simplicity and ease of use that I am accustomed to with Linux.
Have to admit that the upgrade was simple enough to do. Not quick but easy enough.
