Re: Computer operating systems
Just checked Mike. Mine is good... The fail happened long before any install started...

Re: Computer operating systems
Toshiba Satellite P50 ordered from Currys - £630 including a £70 cashback to be claimed. Was looking at cheaper ones, but this one has a 1920 x 1080 screen which looks much better. See how it goes getting it run Linux when it arrives.

Re: Computer operating systems
Good stuff Richard, I'm sure it'll cut the mustard, the good old Tosh is still a pretty good machine and you get a lot for your money...
That's my next project.. Dual boot my Win 10 Tosh with Fedora and see how that goes...
On the face of it, Windows 10 is looking OK but then I am cheating a bit and running Firefox and Thunderbird on it, along with PuTTY and Filezilla - all native Linux apps...

Re: Computer operating systems
Never thought I'd say this but I'm quite content with Windows 10.
Been using it for a whole day now and no showstoppers so far found...
I will continue with it for a bit longer...
Certainly a vast improvement over Win8.. Looks a bit like an update of Win 7 and that's no bad thing...

Re: Computer operating systems
The reason I don't intend to upgrade (for a while, at least) is that Windows 10 is somewhat stuffed with snooping software (such as key loggers and so on).

Well, these are a couple of examples of Windows 10 spying;

Gosh
No worries, I use Linux for the important stuff... Win 10 is for general browsing, playing and email only...
Microsoft are quite welcome to see anything I do on it...
I really don't get paranoid about these things...

Re: Computer operating systems
Just bought a power supply for the late wife's laptop. Old one lost in transit along with a lot of other items belongong to her.
Have it up and running - sort of
Windows 8
heap of crap.
Finding anything is a bloody nightmare and actually DOING stuff
I'm attempting to remove all her saved files and photos as the laptop is going to our youngest daughter but she doesn't want any traces of Janet left on it, too upsetting for her.
I don't want to just bin them though.
Tried several Sandisc USB drives and it sees them but won't sent anything to any of them.
One it said needed formatting so I let it get on with it. Took absolutely ages (only an 8 Gig drive) then when it was finished I discover it has wiped the 8 Gig partition with all the backup stuff and probably the Win8 install copy too
It is now (I think) burning some of the files to a DVD and has been for the last 20 minutes.
Eventually, if it ever gets these files saved, will upgrade to Win10, really looking forward to that
This machine is newer than my Asus laptop and I believe slightly higher spec but everything takes an absolute age to complete - booting is glacial.
And the touchpad doesn'r seem to scroll - plugged a mouse in, much better.
I will admit that some of the problem is lack of familiarity with Windows but overall it falls flat in comparison with Mint and Ubuntu.

Re: Computer operating systems
It does. You do not appreciate how rubbish Win 8 is until you pit it against the best Linux desktops and then Win 10...myglaren wrote: I will admit that some of the problem is lack of familiarity with Windows but overall it falls flat in comparison with Mint and Ubuntu.
This laptop I'm on now was very slow to boot and run with Win 8... Once the upgrade is complete Steve, you'll find the boot is almost instant and everything will run a lot faster...
I'll be interested to hear your views on Win 10. A week in and I'm still very happy with it and I've even got it talking faultlessly to my elderly and legendary HP LaserJet 4000 printer....
The upgrade should be faultless too... Don't do it from Windows update. Download the stand-alone installer...

Re: Computer operating systems
But don't delete the windows 8 installation until the windows 10 install is complete, or you may lose your licence key. You can subsequently reformat or replace the drive and do a clean install if you wish.CitroJim wrote: The upgrade should be faultless too... Don't do it from Windows update. Re: Computer operating systems
Yep, read somewhere about running SiSoft Sandra or similar to extract the key. May be on the laptop body though, haven't looked yet.
It gave an estimate of over a day to burn two folders of pictures. Managed to burn one (about two hours) then decided there was a fault with the burn.
I'm just about to try the disc in my Asus laptop but if that's how fast it is going to be it will be Christmas before I'm done with it.
Just checked the Asus and it has a smidgeon higher spec but not enough to make any appreciable difference. Would have been done in 20 minutes max on either this or the Zoostorm (Asus hardware).

Re: Computer operating systems
Mike, no indeed, definitely don't delete any Win 8 until Win 10 is safely in and then generate new recovery media!
I've felt no need of a clean install...
Bloody IT...
I'm doing NOTHING technical today to give my brain a rest....
