Thanks shtu, could be incorrect belt and possibly made a mistake with tensioner but really don't think so. Hopefully new kit and resetting timing will finally sort it.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Good point about a couple of revolutions and check the pins go back in again - I get pretty nervous so have done that , then another 4 then another 4 check each time!
Is the tensioner one of the "turn the tensioner till the little pointer moves to the correct position" things?
From memory last one if those I encountered and turned the wrong way, I don't think the pointer would go far enough??
Agree with others wrong belt supplied would seem more probable than stretching - it's had next to no run time as yet, has it?
Not sure if the parts data lists number if teeth, but back to that thread would be my first point of call.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Yes I do the couple of revolutions as well. The tensioner is one of the pointer types. Probably wrong belt in the kit, as I said I bought a new kit and I am going to reset all the timing from scratch including the cams. If it has been out by a tooth there shouldn't really be any damage but I want to make sure and as a sanity check I want to see the cams lined up properly. I won't be buying an skf kit again. I bought gates this time as it wasn't Available when I was looking for it. Lesson learned.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Darren,
I only use Gates timing belt kits, on my C5 the tensioner had to be tightened up past the normal mark. Turned 6 times checked timing again before setting tensioner to the correct mark. I must admit it was a pain seeing the tensioning marks on tensioner but not impossible.

On Sylv’s 3008, it says rotate 6 times and that has one of the window type adjusters. Brilliant idea but I really struggled to get the position bang on at first.MattBLancs wrote: 27 Oct 2024, 08:02 Good point about a couple of revolutions and check the pins go back in again - I get pretty nervous so have done that , then another 4 then another 4 check each time!
Weird how instructions on BX’s have gone from 1-2 rotations up to this new requirement.

Yes, seems odd to me, I wondered if it was to do with the "floating pulleys" we have now. XUD was M8 bolts in Cam and Injection pump, pin in flywheel, no floating nonsense to make an error with!

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Thanks for the info lads, I've been trying to get to the car but it just hasn't stopped raining. I can't the stone for the path to the shed because the C5 is in the way. Ironic
I will find out if my theory is correct soon enough. Its a bank holiday here so in and out between the showers.

Just discovered this. I think I need a new head. More money, I'm sick of this car.what could have caused this. I don't know how I missed this.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Is it definitely a crack? First picture it looks as much a weird casting mark.
Can't see any sign of the crack on the camshaft bearing surface, I'm not sure if you can get some sort of dye that'd be drawn along a crack (capillary action) to confirm it?
How does the camshaft look in the corresponding position?

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
If you pull the rockers out the way, put the camshaft back (and bearing caps) = does it turn freely? (rockers out the way, no valve spring interaction to contend with.
I agree with your earlier thoughts that cam timing was unlikely to have been that far out (as to have valve/piston contact) - but try the valves either side of that bearing position= do both travel up and down their guides freely? (Thinking push down with screwdriver in the valve stem, let spring pull it back up again)

P.s. commiserations about the weather, crap here too! (But working, at the PC, all day so I've not missed anything I suppose)

Dye penetrant testing= that's what I was trying to say!

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Hi Matt I had written a whole post in response to you but it didn't save. Cam looked ok but I will inspect further tomorrow. I will post pictures to get your opinion but I think they are good. I thought it was just a casting as well. I have a usb microscope it might show something.Cam looked fine but I will reinspect tomorrow felt very demoralised earlier so just walked away for today and decided research was now required. I will check for free rotation. Glad to see no evidence of damage due to timing and thanks for supporting my hypothesis. I will check valve travel as you have suggested to see if there is any binding. What are your thoughts on repairing that journal casting? I will enquire about the dye testing.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
Morning, glad you walked away and gave yourself a break, bit of "stop and think" always helps.
I'm not sure what could be done if it is a crack - welding oil sodden aluminium isn't going to be much fun and would likely distort the bearing surface. That'll be "line bored" with the other cam bearings so it's getting a bit complex.
If it is a crack, it's an odd one as if you think about it, the rockers are pushing the camshaft up (into bearing caps) not down: onto the head, so I'm not sure what'd instigate the crack in the first place.
Assuming cam runs freely, I'd be tempted to slap it together and see how it goes. Alternative of seeking out a second hand head or costly new one neither palatable really.

P.s. commiserations about the forum "eating" a long post - makes my blood boil when that occasionally happens, fuming!
