Ashington Station

...still not quite there yet for the opening of the Northumberland Line Northern Rail trains doing some trial runs. Meantime one of the enormous "wood pellet" trains from Tyne Dock to Lynemouth biomass power station trundled through the station. Just for good measure, the buffer at Ashington Station. Not quite the buffers of old, and manufactured in Germany. Maybe the UK has lost the ability to manufacture buffers.

The picture probably sums up why former railways are now former railways.
In the early years they were better mousetraps than road transport for both passengers and business, agriculture and industry. The steelworks at Consett and the Durham Coalfield sustained and gave purpose to the lines along the Derwent Valley to Tyneside, down past Beamish to South Pelaw and onto Tyne Dock, and down the Browney valley to Durham. When the Steelworks was closed the traffic was lost.

From a use by the public point of view, the network of those railways is now used by more people than ever it was for passenger transport they form the backbone of the coast to coast cycleway and many other routes, and unlike in Northumberland most of the former old railway routes in Durham are full routes, not piecemeal and inaccessible whether through agricultural and private ownership "land-grab" or pure and simple neglect.

Coal too in this region at least, and very much so in Wales with coal, steel and iron transportation.

They are both paperbacks so quite sendable Jim. I am not very careful about keeping books in pristine condition
and I don't consult them on a daily basis so you are quite welcome to have them for a while with no pressure on a return date. The Falcon library never fines for overdue books!, or requires keeping them in good condition. I like them to be used! No money needs to change hands I'll just send you one or both if you like. PM me if you want to do it.

Ebay/amazon have both at various prices eg https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Railways- ... 9114&psc=1

On another front this cropped up on the "Voice of Pathe" film I put up on the "Remember these..." Thread.

I remember Mallard and Bittern ploughing their trade through Durham Station in the 60's but not Golden Eagle!
