Re: Whatsthisthen?
In my ongoing observation of projects/scrappers/driveway rotters during my morning runs I note some activity with what may be a MKII Golf I've reported on in the past...
I see today the front suspension appears to be receiving attention...
Hopefully this is just a precursor of the tarpaulin being removed and we can then get a positive ID on it as happened with the Stag I've been watching over for years...

Seen at Beamish...
It took us all a while to work out what it was and that was with assistance from other visitors!
I've cropped it a bit to remove the obvious clues... However, some remain

I think that's a don't know from me! Old Pop bottles on the shelf! Dont even know which part of the Museum it would be in. Down at the Colliery, up at the Farm, at the Pub. Not going to get it without a bit of helpCitroJim wrote: 23 Jun 2023, 10:39 Seen at Beamish...

Re: Whatsthisthen?
Maybe not found this
The nearest one to that in his gallery is 230621_125440.jpg taken in the Photographers shop
With the one previous to that being 230621_125140.jpg taken of the Chemist Shop Window.
The logic is sound...every chance that machine was in the Chemists or adjacent to it!
Neil
The photo reference from Jim's original is 230621_125335.jpgThe chemist also sells aerated water (an early form of carbonated soft drinks) to visitors, sold in marble-stopper sealed Codd bottles (although made to a modern design to prevent the safety issue that saw the original bottles banned).[32][51] Aerated waters grew in popularity in the era, due to the need for a safe alternative to water, and the temperance movement - being sold in chemists due to the perception they were healthy in the same way mineral waters were.[52]

Re: Whatsthisthen?
Close Jim
and there's more...Visitors can see a Bradford gas engine, from Windermere Terrace in North Shields, which would have powered the soda pump and that's why the aerated drinks are called Windermere Waters!
There is also be a Codd bottler, of which there are very few still in existence, which Beamish has on loan from the Museum of Bath at Work. https://www.beamish.org.uk/chemist/
Chapter and verse with pictures in this article. Link with Durham City too, both in the original chemist W Smith from Silver Street Durham whom the shop was named after, and in the shop buildings themselves, the Chemist/Windermere Waters and the Photographer, which were built on a curve to mimic the shops on the corner of Elvet bridge where you photographed the al fresco street scene. You probably picked it up but the shops are based on real businesses from times gone by in the North East, and when they were opened current family members and connections of the old businesses did the key opening ceremonies.

Re: Whatsthisthen?
My bad Neil, I replied before watching the video
It's an amazingly beautifully engineered device and I was really quite taken with it... It, prima facie, seemed a bit over the top for the purpose of putting the fizz in pop but then I'm no specialist when it comes to fizzy things!

Re: Whatsthisthen?
This one's barred to Mick and Neil as I was speaking of it over dinner during the June Jolly...
Two clues: I ran past it this morning and Terry Wogan was responsible for both featuring it in a jokey way on his morning radio show and giving it its sobriquet, by which it's now universally known...
Full marks for telling exactly what it is/was and where it is...
I believe it may now be a listed structure...
