Not sure which book you are referring to there Steve, as far as I can see Malvina Reynolds wrote the song as part of a campaign against nuclear testing because the testing was releasing Strontium-90 into the atmosphere which was dissolving into the rain and getting into children's bones and teeth via the water supply. I assume there was a book about that but I cannot find a link?

I was sure that I had read a book that Malvina Reynolds had based her song on but can't remember or find what it was.
I did think it might be "And No Birds Sing" but that was a poem, and also the base of an art project I was assigned, subsequently assigned to the incinerator and best place for it.

I too will not be listening to Purple Rain ever again. The mastery of Prince passed me by completely.

No, it was a description of a number of things with an environmental impact and one of the effects was the reduction in the amount of songbirds. Also acid rain which was the association with the song - in my distorted mind anyway.
