That's good progress indeed!
I'd take at least a week to do it...

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I've managed a GS engine swap in a day, Hillman Imp engines in an evening several times. Princess 1.7 swapped for a 2.2 over two days, all done on my own. Needed an engine crane for the Princess though, bloody heavy lump.
GS engine heavy but lifted it out and the new one in on my own without too much bother.
And I am a nine-stone weakling, or was at the time, a couple more stones added since then and not muscles either

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Shaun tells me that his 95000 mile old clutch was in perfect condition with still more than 1/2 of the linings left and would probably have done another 95000 miles. That’s amazing for a hard driven car which has a reputation for eating clutches for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Is that the total thickness of the lining, or the thickness to the rivets?

At the moment I cannot answer that question, and considering I never saw the new clutch I suppose I will never know. I am only passing on what I have been told.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I think the later clutches were pretty robust. The clutch that came out of mine after 53K looked like new, despite having done two years of Oxford rush hour - was just the release bearing that exploded, and that I'm still absolutely convinced was the fault of the dealer who supplied the car as the clutch cable was waaaaaay too tight. If it hadn't been for that it'd still be in there I reckon - and the £500 would still be in my bank account!

Doesn't look like I'll be doing a clutch on Robyn's C1 any time soon then...

Re: Davie's french attraction.
The 107 is not finished off yet, he hasn’t been back to it.
I’ve been to Aberdeen twice in the last two days, as well as 55 miles delivering last night. I had 20l of veg in the boot, put that in with fuel gauge just touching the red yesterday in Aberdeen, 200 miles later down to red line again. So that’s more or less just under 50mpg on straight veg. At 78p per litre that’s probably the equivalent of 70 mpg lol

Re: Davie's french attraction.
The engine from the 107. Removed the sump for a lookie and found various bits of metal in there that shouldn't be there. Well, I suppose technically there should have been bearings, conrods etc in there but all connected together not in broken bits! It snapped a conrod which then made a bid for freedom through the side of the block. One totally dead engine then. We might remove the cylinder head to keep as a just in case, or might just dump the whole engine. There is a big pile of scrap at the boys workshop waiting to go to the scrappy already, I suspect the engine will join the pile. The moral of this story is if your 107 engine, or any other engine for that matter, is burning up to a litre of oil every 1000 miles and the car does 500 miles a week then it would be prudent to check and add oil every other day, or get the thing fixed. What's the odds on Shaun having learned his lesson? Not a lot I would think.

Good advice Davie and good to heed it... As I've said in the past - my lad didn't heed this advice with his Fester and paid exactly the same price...
I kept the head off his old engine for ages but never needed it and chucked it in the end..

I wonder how long it will be before the new engine goes the same way as the predecessor? Bets, anybody?

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I have to say I am concerned that every time I see my eldest daughter's Pug 207 it has the "Check engine oil level" message on!
I've left a 5ltr can of the finest Total synthetic in her hallway now and see how that goes! I don't know whta more I can do as she was brought up to look after things.
The trouble is it's all part of the "use it until it doesn't work then get a new one" culture. At least Sean fixes his own stuff, I've never even seen my neighbours even wash any of their cars (they are always clean though) let alone check under the bonnet!
Sorry for turning your blog into a Grumpy old man thread Davie!
