I think I'll try first the repair method on my steering rack ... the reparation process is 130 GBP, and what needs to be added to that amount is the taking off and mounting back the steering rack (which I'd let the Citroen Service to do) ... the company that does this should be the best one in Croatia (specialized in steering racks and servo pumps) ... if the refurbished one would function for the next 4-5 years, that would be a real bargain (compared to the new rack, no matter how cheap I may find it)

Anyone has any extra advice, should I do something else on the car once the steering rack is off (that is related to it), or will just refurbishing it and putting back on buy me some extra road time without larger repairs?

Think about the lower ball joints and drive shaft gaiters...Those joints will go at some time as water gets in.

Had mine refurbished last May and it was leaking again by Xmas. Just had it done again (under warranty thankfully) I hope this time it lasts a bit longer.

As for turnaround time, dropped it in to my local independent Tuesday morning for the rack removing and sending off for refurbishment and it was back with us Saturday lunchtime.

So I just want to make sure I get this right - this was a refurb from a used unit and not a Citroen Main Dealer new replacement? Reason being is Citroen are offering me another year's Extended Warranty for about £250. As I've already had my rack replaced with a new one under warranty - you can see why I went into cardiac arrest mode when you said yours started leaking again! :)

£250 for a years extend is a DEAL.....I would as its a good bet for 4 hours labour at a dealer

....but check the small print about bushes/rubber parts and have the gearbox oil changed on the sneak

Decided to try with the repair of the steering rack ... here's how it currently looks like

2 years warranty on the job, the price should be like the early estimate, 130 GBP ... and to add to that the required working hours for the rack taking out/putting back in activity ...

shame the pinion housing cant be replaced on it's own.. still a tricky job but that's the main issue VB? (plus a recon of the input shaft)
I guess there will be all of the seals inside it.. I remember once trying to rebuild one and I couldn't..

That looks HORRIBLE !!!! .... who the heck designed that pile of poo....good job choosing a material that WILL corrode and destroy the seal.

How much movement is on the shaft...in/out ?

I am thinking a gaiter or the correct size could me obtained and fitted to avoid the corrosion ?

That's exactly how mine went before they replaced the whole thing. Bloody stupid design.

Went to get the C3 MOTd today and had a chat to my mate who is the Service Manager at the main dealer and asked him about the warranty - he said exactly the same thing - so will go for it for the piece of mind. :-D
