John, yes it does, perfect sense.. It's then only cost you only a pump, filter and a drop of oil to find out..
Fingers crossed it's all going to turn out just perfect

Re: new addition to fleet
thanks Jim
stop the press !
had to be too good to be true..
Have just spoken (for the first time) to the garage that condemned the car last week on behalf of Simon, the owner..
They turned it over and noticed it sounded bad/unusual .. pulled injectors and compression tested it.. nothing anywhere..
cambelt was still on.
Oil pressure tested it, nothing doing
They went into sump and came to assumption the oil pump was dead - by virtue of the pump being hard to turn
and
noticed about 2 litres of oil in the under engine charge pipes..
any theories folks.. about what may have happened..
pump fail led to camshaft seize and turbo destruction? that's my first attempt...

Oh dear John,
That sounds a bit terminal...
Your theory sounds pretty good...
Are you going to pull the engine apart and determine what's gone and what might have happened for sure..
I'll be watching with interest...
What's the next step in the plan?
Maybe transplant a 1.9TD into it?
(only joking LOL)

Re: new addition to fleet
hehe
yes will post mortem it Jim.. it was always a risk..
have found the only other c5 160hp engine, at a cost.. (although only about twice what the oil pump fix would have been on its own)..
its from a non hydro car, and possibly a manual car.. I don't have much room for engine swaps, and I would have nothing left financially for any other issues.. and its going to be a complex removal I think..

What I'm saying is that you should measure the crankshaft with a micrometer , nobody can know by just looking if damage has been done.jgra1 wrote:
what I am saying is... if the shells are bad, then the rest of the engine will surely die, so I may as well not replace the shells. this week...
does that make any sense..
I would as a matter of course always fit new shells when I strip an engine, the cost being less than the value of my labour if having to do the job twice.

I understand gibbo..
I wasn't about to strip her.. I was just under the sump looking at oil pump and thought I would look at one crankpin/shell while there..
I think the shell condition is a bit academic now..

Re: new addition to fleet
anyway .. can anyone think of pitfalls with an engine from a steel sprung car, and probably a manual not an auto.. for the donor?
just generic pitfalls from your experience .. the last engine swap I did was a v6 406, but IIRC it was a like for like swap...
Oil coolers, sensors etc..
I imagine a lot of the engine side of things will be the same.. the suspension is mostly a separate system..
or, does anyone want a mint white c5 X7 exclusive (a small project)

Re: new addition to fleet
Nope.. Flywheels will need swapping but apart from that it should not be a problem John. As far as I can see.. Can't imagine there's any significant show-stopping differences...

Re: new addition to fleet
You'll need to code the injectors on the replacement engine with the ECU.

Find an earlyer engine instead prehaps the 2.0 hdi 138 which were even in the mk.1 phase two c5s .. if its just the car you want to enjoy.. the 138bhp engine seems to fair better..
Remember citroen even fitted the 1.6 hdi dv6ted 110bhp engine to the x7 too...
as for project.. yea id give it a go.. but im full up and absolutley full up...

Re: new addition to fleet
I may change tack with this. I want to know what happened with the engine and then decide what to do.. not to spend a lot of cash on an unknown unit and then the hassle of dvla.. I have no proof the new unit isn't stolen and not getting much help from the dismantler. I don't even have proof of its miles.. it could have gone to moon and back with no oil changes, and I could be back at this point in a month
