trick is to pick and choose as these places as they run loss leaders:

They do my MOT (£35), recharge air-con (£30). I buy their tyres but upset them as I buy these on-line but they must fit locally (on-line price is 40% cheaper than shop price!!) on the other hand my Pug failed an MOT on brakes. They checked and diagnosed needed new drums (+ new shoes and bearings) at £460.and if cylinders were needed an undisclosed extra. (genuine fail as I knew drums were scored)
Much to thier surprise I said no and I took it away to a mate who found the cylinder dust shields had all been damaged (wern't last time I had drums off so work it out yourselves. Cost for new drums, shoes, bearings and cylinders £120 including a bit of labour.

I've been back since as for some stuff they are still ok. told the guy and he wasn't surprised and admitted they probably overcharge but that was head office rules. As for the damage to cylinders he just shrugged and said maybe they tore whilst they were checking then changed the subject.

We continue a fair relationship but they know that I know cars. They are reasonable because we are a five car customer!

Hi,

Have been researching my mot failures issues. Have ordered a pair of the amber 501's and the amber 581's to fix my discoloured bulbs. They are prob original and the car is about 14 yrs old now. The other light issues we can adjust and improve the connections to solve.

This just leaves the binding brakes on the offside front. When I changed the pads a year ago 1 of the pads was down to the metal. I could not have left it any longer to change. When we put the new pads on the piston seemed to work but was not working as it should. I thought we had fixed it but no.

After thinking about it and looking on ebay I found a caliper/piston fix kit.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Xanti ... 48496ca9f0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We are pretty sure the prob is in the seal on the piston to the calipers and will refurbish my existing caliper.

Has anyone got any advice on this? There are some references in Haynes and I have removed the calipers and brake pads before so I can get the caliper off.

A little tip I learned from a friend regarding M.O.T's...
Find some one who is always busy, and difficult to to get booked into; reason being, they are likely not to be looking for work :wink:

Hi All,

Good news. It has passed the retest today. The myth of the cheap (£21) mot is true. They did not charge anything on retest. Have just got back from Bristol and the car seems fine.

It seems now that VOSA have changed the test certificate. Now they print out a white piece of paper (VT30 failure, VT20 pass) in an attempt to save money. It seems to be done online more now. You can check the direct.gov website (http://www.direct.gov.uk/yourmotcheck" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and it has on there the most recent mot information. I have just checked the website and it says mine is now mot'd untill Oct 2013.

Thanks for any advice,

Steve
