I have 110BHP HDI xantia, i think its a great engine, its econimical, has a good turn of speed if required, and good torque.
I tow a caravan ( Dont shout at me !! ) and the xantia has been my best tow car.
I have had a 1.9 xud but it was in a 405 again i would say it was a great engine, i keep consider buying an xud xantia as i want to run on veg oil again as diesel is so expensive.
My choice is an Hdi as it matches my driving style i think as you dont need to rev it, i dont think i need to rev past 2k very often round town !
Help me make my mind up time then.

Sorry Peter. I missed your post earlier.Peter.N. wrote:Where abouts in Exeter is it?
It's going to be at: Buller Road, Exeter, EX4 1DA if that means anything?
Apparently it's at a storage depot presently, pending a full inspection and valet, having just been brought up from Bristol.
The one piccy of is pretty poor tbh, as is the description.
Looks like either an LX or SX (wheel trims) but at the price he's asking I fully expect it be an absolute virtual minter.
Got a sunroof, but not sure if they fitted them to all estates.
Claims to have leather, but that was only fitted to the Exclusive iirc, and this is defo not one of them.
I don't mind paying top dollar if it's worth it, and a 1 owner specimin with only 69k sounds possibly promising.
Aren't you a bit far from Exeter btw?

Even with the lack of a Bosch pump on a 2.1 Xantia i can't see why it would be slower than the 1.9TD. It has more power and torque which comes in lower down in the rev range. Perhaps if you over rev it and drive it like the 1.9 it will be slower, as you will have passed the useful rev band? I can't imagine Citroen bothering to make a 2.1 Xantia if it turned out to be slower!
I know for a fact that a 2.1TD Bosch in an XM is as lively as the 2.0HDi 110 in a C5 hatch. Our 2.1 Xm is an effortless drive, its lively, refined once going, its got a nice performance band and its economical. It also does not struggle up to 70mph or even up to three figures and beyond. I do like the Bosch 2.1.
I like the 2.0HDi 110s, very good engines, very refined, the most economical and it usually proves reliable.
If S1 Xantia id try for a 2.1TD, usually they are with a good spec and i like the 2.1 front on the S1 Xantia. You could Bosch convert it if you must.
If S2 Xantia then a 2.0HDi 110 without question.

Put foot down. Epic says "ah you want to go faster do you? Ok we'll accelerate at my chosen rate not yours, mwhahahahaha" *slow trundle up to 70*Citroenmad wrote:Even with the lack of a Bosch pump on a 2.1 Xantia i can't see why it would be slower than the 1.9TD. I would imagine the epic was fitted to the 2.1 as an environmental improvement over the semi-electric bosch, in preperation for EU anti-fun, sorry, anti-pollution regulations that were likely.
This would have been before the HDi developement started.
Take the 90HDi in my mum's Xsara, a direct injection engine that is less responsive than my 1.9TD, why? Simple, the performance is handled soley by the ECU controlling the pump, it decides how quickly you can accelerate, not your right foot.

Well that doesn't sound like a lot of fun
Go for the 2.0HDi 110 in that case
Or a 2.1TD Bosch Xm

Intercooler?
That's a staggering bhp increase,![]()
but just how does the clutch and gearbox cope with that?
I REALLY want to know more about these bhp claims from a 1.9 XUD engine.
I increased the bhp on my Fabia diesel from 130 to 185 via e remap from Revo.
Standard gearbox and clutch lasted about 15k.

A gearbox and clutch every year, that could get boring!C.J. wrote: I increased the bhp on my Fabia diesel from 130 to 185 via e remap from Revo.

I dont think id like to run a car which has such a huge power increase from its standard bhp. If you need that much power, id buy another car. 90bhp to 200 is asking a lot.
Im all for remaps though! Might need to get mine done sometime in the not too distant..

Indeed. I very fortunately had the gearbox repaired and clutch replaced under warranty. Very lucky indeed, but the dealer was one of my best customers at the time, so that may have helped.Citroenmad wrote:A gearbox and clutch every year, that could get boring!C.J. wrote: I increased the bhp on my Fabia diesel from 130 to 185 via e remap from Revo.

Sold the car shortly after anyway, and had the re-map removed.
2nd vRS now, but have left it standard, which is more than adequate touquey and smile inducing tbh.
As you rightly say. If you want a scud missile, then buy one

Xac says:

200hp from a 90hp engine, crazy and [if] whilst possible, I agree that it's a slight overkill in many ways
getting another 20 hp is still a good increase, and a reliable one I would think
John
agree with that, was thinking it as I drove in today.. nice useable power from 2200 and all over by about 3400Interesting, all my 1.9TD's have pulled from just over 2000rpm, the power really kicks in at about 2400rpm, it's one of the things that makes them quite special

I don't know enough about the build to tell, I'm afraid, he keeps a lot of his work secret. I just saw the dyno video and his report.C.J. wrote:Got to be some sort of a monster of a turbo for that sort of increase surely?MikeT wrote: With changes to the pump and turbo, over 200hp is possible![]()

It might have been a custom hybrid turbo or something off a rice burner but I don't recall it being especially large. I think the key is that diesel's can take so much more boost than petrol engines - 50psi was mentioned in this build, maybe 60psi. No idea what I/C was used either but again, I don't think it's such a big issue with a diesel?
Paddle clutch and HDI gearbox IIRC and both have no reported problems, which is interesting as I was once told the driveshafts are the weakest link?
But what I'm getting at is XUD 1.9TD's don't need to be slow. In fact, if mine ran as poorly as other's have reported, I'd be worried something was wrong.

I wish I could tell you more except your experience sounds typical of what I've read - you get the tune then find something broke or made it undrivable/unreliable.C.J. wrote:I REALLY want to know more about these bhp claims from a 1.9 XUD engine.

But what I do know is that someone, somewhere will work out why it failed and find a solution to push the limits further. I know 1.9TDi's can be taken beyond 300hp and some of those yankee pickup trucks are pushing 1000hp.
The secret seems to lie in the torque of a diesel while at the same time can be it's achilles heel.

There's several owners of highly modded Fabia vRS's pushing upwards of 230 bhp, but we're talking monster turbos's, intercoolers, water injection ststems, paddle plasma clutches, uprated gearboxes, etc etc.
All seems a bit pointlass to me tbh. Just go and buy a Evo 10 or something similar. Probably cheaper after all those mods too, oh, and don't come crying when you can't get the 30k for it that you're asking because of all of these tens of thousnads you've spent on it either.
