I can't understand why the last clutch wouldn't have juddered if it's the flywheel?HDI wrote:This will almost definitely be a warped or high spotted flywheel.

The old clutch would have had less clamping pressure so would have slipped more on take up, the damping springs would be fatigued and also it would have conformed to the flywheel through wear. The new clutch has full clamping pressure and new friction surface so will be more abrupt on takeup causing uneven drive until fully released.uncle buck wrote:I can't understand why the last clutch wouldn't have juddered if it's the flywheel?HDI wrote:This will almost definitely be a warped or high spotted flywheel.
This assumes the new clutch was installed properly.
Personally I would always inspect the flywheel face and if it was warped or high spotted would advise the customer to have a new one fitted.
On high performance cars I would not fit a new clutch without a new flywheel.

Over the years I have fitted something in the region of 3-4 thousand clutches. Apart from those fitted with dual-mass flywheels (which I usually change) I've only ever changed a handfull of flywheels. I've normally only had problems with judder when using cheaper clutches. Certain vehicles are more prone to this problem than others. Larger peugeots and citroens are in this category, along with later astras. For the 106/saxo the transmech clutches work fine, but I would'nt use them on the larger models. A couple of years ago I bought a peugeot partner van which had had a new clutch fitted and which had gone back to have the judder rectified. The garage fitted a new flywheel. The judder returned. If it judders it's usually the clutch unit.

High performance cars, particularly those with 4WD are a special case.
Some drivers don't have the skill to drive such vehicles correctly and excessively slip the clutch under extreme power. This can easily heat the flywheel to red hot in localised area's resulting in warping and high spotting. I've done clutches on Mitsubishi Evo's with the flywhels blued all over !!
Then again I've done clutches on normal cars with evidence of persistant excessive clutch slipping with high revs. Seems to be a bit of a woman driver thing though when they take forever getting into parking bays

Well I have to say that Cassy's transmech clutch is standing up very well to the mistreatment I give it
If she were a motorbike lets just say I'd never need to change the front tyre

will the juddering clutch wear the clutch quickly out ? i was wondering if i can just live with it ? i can pull away fine as is, i could nt afford to through it all again and it would make me consider changing the car.
again i am not sure if i am going over the top but if i bring the clutch up to a light bite the padal still has to move a fair distance more for proper pull away ? i would say lite bite about half way pull away about 3/4 lift on the pedal ?

Hydraulic clutches have their bite point right at the top

Obviously not right at the top as though it's only biting when your foot's off, but at a level that the cable ones would suggest meant the clutch needed changing.flying clutchman wrote:??Xac wrote:Hydraulic clutches have their bite point right at the top
It's one of the things I dislike about the activa/2.1TD, clutch bite is too high for me.
