Noise near the NS headlight will be the purge valve, perfectly normal. Manifold gasket failure is common and its either turbo off with the head, or engine out...

Good thinking Gareth,

I forget about that one. In the MK1 Activa it lives right out of the way up in the inner wing and is therefore slient....

You may well be able to relax on the manifold gasket issue Dom.

When you listen, you're not mistaking the purge valve clicking for regulator ticks are you? Also, are you sure when you pull out F8 (middle fuse in the RH (as you look at them) bank of fuses in the engine bay, that you are not again confusing purge valve noise with that of the hydractive electrovalves?

I cannot understand why removing F8 does not disable the hydracive ECU...

Gareth - cheers for that, what does the purge valve 'purge'?

My dad thought the exhaust was blowing funnily enough, so that could need doing too, which would be a fun job!

I'll film the noises it makes in a bit, I'm at uni today though so I may not be able to do it til later or tomorrow if I wait for it to be light. There's a definate few clicks every 90 odd seconds which sounds like the regulator.

The test I've been doing is removing the fuse with the engine off, then opening the door and listening for a buzz from the front and rear. And there is a definate buzz which is on for 30s after I open and close the door with fuse 8 removed, and fuse 3 under the steering column removed (at different times) which is what my manual says is the hydractive fuse.

The purge valve purges petrol vapour from the tank into the inlet manifold instead of to atmosphere.

Ahh, should it purge as often as it does in mine then? Seems to be once or twice every second

Yes, that's the right rate. As soon as the engine has a bit of warmth about it, the purging will commence. And, as you hear, it ticks very frequently indeed...

Sounds fine to me... Best thing is to keep the bonnet shut, mutes all these horrible noises..

Phew.

One last question then, the steering makes a weird noise, I've noticed it when it's building pressure but it might do it all the time as I've not really driven it yet, I'll go and film that in a minute to see what you think about it..

Just gone and taken two videos and taken two photos, I've just discovered that I sound a bit like Karl Pilkington when I say 'errrm' at the end of the long video  Also when I first open the bonnet my car doesn't sound as rough as the video makes out. But if that noise sounds like anything bad let me know. (could it be the regulator or just the injectors?)

Anyway, at the start of the first video I thought you couldn't hear the steering noises, but you can, it's just the bonnet's shut so it's not as loud. From inside all you hear is the grindey sort of sound (the one I do a brilliant impression of  ), from outside it's louder, but from inside I can hear a fluid sort of sound that the camera doesn't pick up.

Anyway, I apologise for the length of the video but things about xantias are pretty slow :p

The time between regulator ticks is about 1 minute and 15 seconds, the time for the stop light to go out is 30 or so seconds, and probably around 2 minutes to get to normal ride height.

Nothing really happens from about 2:30 minutes til 7:15 odd in the video so you can skip that bit if you wish :P

The big video is taking forever to load, so this one sort of shows you noise through the steering:

And here's the ram, is there supposed to be what looks like molybdenum (typo?) grease under the ram gaiter?

That looks like silicon sealant to me - my Molyslip grease is as black as coal!

If you are concerned about typo's then Firefox has a spellchecker like a word processor and you can install a would-be British English dictionary that thinks it is an American one :) :(

Which thinks Molyslip should be Payslip -oh well!

Photobucket is what I'm using, it's just taking forever as it's a huge video for some reason, crappy old digi cam.

I thoguht it looked like molybdenum/CV joint grease. I'll have a feel of it tomorrow and see what it feels like. If it's the worst thing in the world for washing off it'll be CV grease...

Here's the link to the other video when it feels like uploading..

Sorry, took it for granted that it would be a YouTube video.
