Thankyou crossy2425,
you took the words out my mouth, or off my keyboard!
Obviously the Perkins has a wider tolerance for allowing the valve to piston timing to be out... but generally DERV timings should be damm near spot on...

I KNOW it's not the same engine - the point was that the engine ran with the pump being timed wrongly. The cam was timed in correctly to the crank so there (fortunately) wasn't any "test" of piston to valve clearance.
BTW it was only the Prima when sold by Perkins, in the Montego and Maestro it was officially the MDi engine.

I discovered some years ago that a CX diesel will run (albeit badly) with the pump timing 180 degrees out!
Really confused me for a bit; I thought the replacement pump was duff until I had a cup of tea and a think...

Bob, once you've changed the engine mounts, and got rid of the horrible vibration at hot idle, you'll be wanting to sort out the lack power?
I suggest the FIRST thing you do is to check that the boost pressure sense pipe that run from the O/S plastic air pipe to the top of the injector pipe. If this is split (the give-away is oil over the top of the cam box),
the pump will 'think' there's no turbo pressure and will limit the fuel supply accordingly. In fact, the loss of boost pressure will be quite small (small pipe on even smaller spigot) but the injector pump won't sense much or any boost pressure. It's a five minute job to check the pipe and not much longer to replace it. It happened on my slightly older 1.9TD (95MY built 01/96) - the performance was transformed.
It now blasts up Haldon Hill (on the A38off the southern end of the M5) fully laden in 5th at the legal limit and sees off the 2.0i also in the family.
