thanks Jim.. I would hedge my bets on the second one....

Can you describe it to me? I can understand the pinion.. where does the valve fit in?

ok so this is the LHM entry exit area, near the pinion, which ultimately powers the steering.. coming clearer...

ok a rotary valve that modifies flow of LHM to either side of the piston within the rack, depending which way the steering is turning

That's precisely right John...

There are different versions depending on the type of hydraulics fitted. Sinkers have a different one to anti-sinks. Worth bearing in mind if you look to get one from a scrappy.

I got an advisory on my December MOT for the steering valve on mine weeping but its still very little at the minute and the area has dirt all over it so its well hidden at the minute

Hi John,

Sadly, there is no repair kit for the pinion valve available but Pleiades do them ex-stock.

You'll be needing a white one. There are different ones fitted to the 2.1TD, Activa (Turbo CT) and V6. They're translucent yellow although I'd expect white ones to look rather translucent yellow by now after years of LHM flowing through them

I can't remember offhand, it was some kind of special metal glue that had been bought from a motor factor for another job. I'll ask him next time I see him.

chaps a bit of help here...

I can't get this pinion valve unit out to even inspect it....

it's all loosened bar one of the four hydraulic pipes, but it needs to rise a lot and the column U J wont allow it

will throw a pic on blog, but if anyone can help now is the time

ok well .. i dunno..

2 outer seals and 3 inner o rings and what looks like a space for another o ring..

rack grease, although a bit green, doesn't look LHM'd...

so Jim what bit am I trying to replace? I cant see anything replaceable except all the seals... which is great but something tells me I wont be able to do that..

If you had a MK1 sinking Xantia I guess it most likely would John, as these used many BX components.

The pinion valves changed with the introduction of the 6+2 pump and anti-sink. Quite how different they are I'm not sure but all I know is that a repair kit for the BX pinion valve is still listed under a new part number of 4048 Q8 and at a cost of just over 21 quid.

I reckon the valves will be so similar that it may be worth taking a chance on the kit but I reckon there is one person who will know for sure.. Martin at Pleiades. Might be worth giving him a call perhaps?

Strange that service.citroen.com list a repair kit for the BX but not any Xantia. Interestingly the same repair kit is offered for both the Mk1 and MKII XM which makes me think all the more that it might work for the Xantia.

well off came my sump last night, and there was no gasket.. just beads of black/orange sealer squezed inside and out of the sump.. this cant be original can it

?

if not someone has been in there in the past, wonder why.. and they have avoided £4 or so for a sump gasket..

could certainly be to blame for some of the oil leakage I was getting...

If it didn't have an undertray i would imagine that its possibly caught something at some point and has maybe holed the sump and they've bodged a second hand one on maybe or that it has leaked out from the original gasket maybe?
Saying that mine seems to be on the original and isn't leaking yet(fingers crossed)
Looks very clean inside that case though

Some of the dirt is never easy to get off, specially when it gets caked in during the summer months with the engine heat.

A tip for this is to use the super powered jet wash's at a sainsburys or the like where £1 gets you a few minutes of blasting at high pressue and with high heat as well

or a friend with a karsher steam washer

Keep up the good work though its nice to read up everyday and see how its going, specially the bike trips for heavey parts

Are you going the oil cooler as well to clean that out??

the sump is a bit better on the outside, I just wanted it sparkking , for no good reasons really

oil cooler.. not sure.. have that and filter, and other ancilleries to throw on tonight, plus the orc's belt..
