My Dad had a new ZX TD in 1993 and it went like hell! I had a BX DTR Turbo at the same time and it was just as fast. I remember in my younger (foolish) days it would do an indicated 112 with four people on board! Converted a few of my mates to diesel too!

An outstanding car for its time the BX.

This new thread has had me playing with the pump settings too. I have positioned the diaphragm plunger so that the pin (inside) moves the most. I removed the nylon spacer. The star wheel was moved about an eighth of a turn clockwise to lessen the spring strength and ensure the boost pressure moves the diaphragm fully - especially now it can move further. The top screw is about 3 turns up from its original position.

I had tweaked the pump some time ago but not properly. I was fairly happy with the results then - but now it’s far better! Yipee!!

I don’t have excessive smoke at the moment but I would like to screw in the top screw a bit to assist off boost pickup. This is bound to produce more smoke and I guess I’ll have to reduce this by moving the star-wheel to increase the boost spring pressure.

It’s a slow process, making changes and road testing and then doing it again! Can anyone think of a way to check if the boost pressure fully lowers the diaphragm plunger?

davek-uk: I'm not sure removing the plastic washer is a good thing as I assume it's a stop for the plunger. Without it, the full boost pressure is resisted only by the spring and the strength of the rubber diaphragm. Will that allow the plunger to lower too far? Perhaps damaging the fuelling pin or stretching the diaphragm? Better suggestion I read was to measure from pin top mark to top of eccentric cone and skim off only that amount from the plastic washer.

mooseshaver: I hate quicktime with a vengeance, it won't fully uninstall, leaving that annoying tray icon on every startup - I'll give it a miss thanks.

now guys this thread is most interesting and depressing :( :(

there you all are showing how quick your cars get to 60 and leaving me and my basic 1.9d lx well and truly B*&&$£*D :cry: :cry:

my phone will only record for 15 secs ill be lucky to have got to 40 by then :oops: :oops:

prehaps i can do it as a low budget series :lol: :lol:

Don't despair, we can sort that if you want. Either up the power get you a bigger phone memory card 8)

Sadly, yes, any tuning would probably increase consumption. Are you running veg oil?

yes but only about 50/50 and getting about 40mpg around town dont really do any more than 10 miles in a single trip and SWMBO has a very heavy foot drives it like it was a ferrari :lol:

I found I can be lighter-footed when there's more power on tap, so to speak. If you want to have a go at tweaking, I'm happy to assist - when I get over, that is :oops:

Don't think I can do anything to my pump on my xantia as it's a 97 model with ECU control over fuelling etc with a cat. I've removed the cat,disabled the EGR and removed both throttle dampers from the pump and its made it an awful lot better and more responsive but I think that's all I can do to it?

My old 405 had a torx headed bolt visible on the top of the pump with a nut,the xantia has a cover over that bit! Boo Hoo!!

Can anyone advise..?

Mine's a '98 with cat' (still fitted), EGR (disabled) and ECU controlled (timing & cold-start only I think) but still it (Bosch pump) can be tweaked and modded.

Using a thin screwdriver or two, you can gently lever up the torx screw cover for access. Search the forum for tuning and you'll find more info.

Yeah it comes out with a screwdriver and a bit of hammering, you wont need to do much adjustment to this part though as most of the gains are made underneath.
