1.9TD head replacement

More likely that the water gets in through a simple head gasket failure. 2 adjacent cylinders would suggest a failure of the gasket between the bores.

Earlier heads (for 1.7TD) are prone to cracking - which may let water in - although often the cracks seal as soon as the engine starts and the alloy expands.

That should sort it,

Just a quick note to say that as others have said, the cam caps are in line bored, they are machined as part of the head itself, so getting some to match with your head would be about as unlikely as me giving birth!!

This is the reason that you cannot buy any.

You can put some on and get away with it, but the picture shows exactly what would be expected to happen, the caps will crack open.

Alas, Jim found out today that the head was banana shaped so is no good.
Anyone want a £20 doorstop?

So it's off to the local (but not particularly nice or cheap, not the one in Northampton) scrappy for a head with a guarantee.

Yes, a tragedy

I spent hours carefully stripping and cleaning it ready for a skim and when the engineer looked it over he found it 31 'thou out and well beyond salvation.

I spent a good while having a vey interesting and informative chat with him about machining heads and what can be retrieved and what cannot.

Still, on the positive side, I did find an excellent small engineering company and the head has yielded a lot of useful spares...

Well the new head is on mostly thanks to Jim's hard work.
I found a use for my weight in tightening the bolts.
Just need to reconnect everything.
Hit a (hopefully) slight snag with the manifold gasket.
The heater matrix pipe out the back of the head is stopping the gasket fitting properly, that end of the head it's being tilted up so doesn't line up with the holes.
Is it safe to trim the gasket slightly?

Got some photos of the pistons to post up when I get a chance, showing where they kissed the valves

Its probably OK to trim the gasket. Presumably the bit you need to trim is on the edge - so what does the nearest hole seal and how far away is it?

Having ascertained that - look at the gasket and at all the other holes doing the same job - and what is the smallest section surrounding one of them? If yours is larger - no problem.

it's only 1-2mm out, enough to stop the bolts lining up with the holes.
