Re: Davie's french attraction.
Well yesterday I took the 107 over to get two new tyres fitted. I thought she was sounding really rough although it was driving ok. However at about 2am this morning it expired with a big bang at 94000 miles. So the hunt begins for a replacement engine. It shouldnt be too difficult fitting an engine into it, and also a clutch at the same time would be advisable. Thats about 20k its been burning oil, he should have got the engine overhauled then in my opinion. Oh well, its not really my problem.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
It sounded very tappity when I drove it earlier, he said it started chapping then gave a bang and smoke from under the bonnet. He was only 1/2 Mike from his mates house so it was pushed there and left. By his description sounds like big ends. Probably been run short of oil with it burning oil. We all know he has no mechanical sympathy for cars!

So while the FAULT is somewhere between the cylinder head and the gearbox the CAUSE is between the steering wheel and the pedals.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Shaun has had a few total engine failures in his 5 years of driving and one common denominator is the squidgy bit controlling it! My sympathy level for him is zero. Found a 14000 mile engine at a local scrappy for 350 + vat so I expect that will be the repair route

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I would get him all the bits to re-build the engine for Christmas, and leave him to it. As he hasn't a working vehicle to collect that engine (and, if I were you, I would not offer to help him collect it (and that also means he cannot borrow any of your cars)) he would be hard put to get the engine back home.

Had exactly the same happen with stepson's Fiesta years back when he was at Uni... He never checked the oil despite knowing it used plenty and it ran a big end when doing 70 on the A470 near Cardiff, It seized and popped a conrod out through the side of the block...
The conrod thumped the starter and dented it so badly it was seized too... It also destroyed the cat... You may find it's done the cat in on the 107 too Davie...
I just swapped the engine for a decent one from a beaker...
£350 is exactly what I paid for the replacement Fiesta engine... Odd that, in 12 years inflation has not caught up with the price of good used engines!
I reckon the swap should be easy... I'll be watching with great interest...

Re: Davie's french attraction.
He does need to be taught a lesson - like having to pay for the fitting of the new engine.
It's the only way he might think twice about doing it again! You sometimes need to be cruel to be kind.](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)

Re: Davie's french attraction.
His record with engines is a fiesta, ran out of oil seized engine. Escort bought from an old guy that had never been over 40mph, broke timing belt after a week, pug 205 gti, broke timing belt. He was advised with both of these to take it easy as they were old and not had much use so run them on, but instead he thrashed them from word go. Fabia, twice holed the sump and very lucky it has not needed an engine although he crashed it. Civic type r blew the gearbox. Now the 107, it’s been burning oil for ages, had I still been using it regularly then it would have been dipped every week and topped up and may have just kept burning oil for ages. Him? Top up the oil once the oil light comes on. Then it took two litres. It only takes 3 litres for a oil change! No wonder the engine blew. And no wonder he is skint. Well it’s tuff s**t on him. He had given me money to put on two tyres the other day and I went and did that for him, but now he is on his own. That’s why I decided to stop car sharing and me using the 107 for deliveries as O was the one doing all the maintenance, and paying for it for him to wreck it. He is now just left with his mx5 working, but I expect he will soon break it too. He ain’t getting any of my cars to break.

Official route is out the bottom on a table - without the need to remove the subframe interestingly- and the AC doesn't need to be drained. Book time is 12 hours though - although that's 'replace' engine, so may include some time for swap over of ancillaries?

That was how the Fiesta engine is done... I did it by dropping the engine onto a dolly, then lifted the body up and off the engine using the engine crane and pulled the engine out from under on the dolly...
Worked a treat...

Re: Davie's french attraction.
A 29000 mile engine sourced for £160 and a Borg and beck clutch sourced for £56. A weekends labour for him and his brother in law and service items for the replacement engine and it’s only a £250 repair. That’s probably what a main stealer would take for a service and coolant change!

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I can vouch for that being the cost a main dealer charges for a service! Or at least did back in 2010 anyway...
