Not much to report, busy with the family for Christmas, it's just starting to get back to normal:
I must remember NOT to go to the tip during the Christmas break, goodness me, it was busy!
Two (part full, but fairly heavy) brown bins emptied from garden tidying up, plus, following a good sort out, a fair bit of WEEE - including our old double oven.

Gosh, must have been the low light levels, that's a fairly terrible image, even by my low standards!

Very handy trailer , I owned 3 over several years , one for all my equipment for building works, one for fire wood and one for general tip runs, ive no need for one now , but they definitely earn there keep

There's a lot of rubbish about Matt. Our bin collections are delayed by two days due to the festivities this week but it didn't stop many putting out their bins yesterday, clearly not having read all the communiques abut revised collection days...MattBLancs wrote: 29 Dec 2025, 20:10 I must remember NOT to go to the tip during the Christmas break, goodness me, it was busy!
By far the majority of bins are overflowing and many have supplementary mountains of black bags beside them!
Me? just abut normal. I share my bins with my neighbour as we both would take weeks to fully fill a bin...
Beats me how some families create so much rubbish

Oh yes it's great. I've two smaller ones (that I need to get rid of, well at least one of them!) but this big one is often what's needed.Huskyxantia wrote: 29 Dec 2025, 20:59 Very handy trailer , I owned 3 over several years , one for all my equipment for building works, one for fire wood and one for general tip runs, ive no need for one now , but they definitely earn there keep

I think, politely, there are quite different levels of enthusiasm for recycling and also for actually packing/size reducing waste.CitroJim wrote: 30 Dec 2025, 05:42There's a lot of rubbish about Matt. We have a medium size box with a lid for paper and cardboard, emptied fortnightly, despite the various ongoing DIY projects on the go here (which often generate lots of corrugated cardboard) it's rare we've beyond two boxes full, yet often I see others on our street are well beyond full each collection day!
However they tend to be "full" mostly of near enough intact boxes, minimal attempt to flatten.
We have three compost bins, would think most have none,
We separate out batteries, scrap metal, dead light bulbs, cartons and anything else that has a dedicated route available - again, I don't think a lot of folks can be bothered.
Hey ho, I guess those (over stuffing, but at least) using the bins are to be encouraged - over the idiots who fly tip

A lot of what I see in overfilled bins is 2L milk and pop bottles not being collapsed, smaller ones too, and cardboard boxes crammed in. Always the same houses.
Locally we are asked to collapse boxes and bind them together with string if there is a lot, so it goes into the wagon flat.
Our bin men are very accommodating.
Cardboard can be shredded and added to the garden, great soil improver I have found recently.
Most of mine goes in the compost heap anyway.

Interesting, I've not tried composting cardboard or adding to the soil, though did blend some paper shreddings into the soil when I rotovated our back garden ahead of grass seeding it

Soil + shreddings
Rotovator + berk
You can see the sumptuous nature of the soil we have to work with! Grass seems to grow ok on it (was a little concerned about bleach in the white paper)

I have an excellent source of that, horse farm adjacent to my daughter's work.

I could do with some horse poo for my garden
It's seriously good stuff!
Yes, on recycling and the use of bins. I think you're right on all counts Matt. I always flatten boxes and do my very best to neatly recycle as much as I possibly can whilst trying to minimise the amount of rubbish I generate in the first place.
I also make sure all my rubbish is clean, especially what goes into recycling.
My bins get a regular cleaning too. I can't stand stinky bins at all... I have an arrangement with my neighbours where in return for the use of their bins, I look after them by putting them out on the designated day and keeping them clean.
