Or just buy an FTO. They look better anyway.

Now that would be a unique RX-8, a diesel one. I'll suggest it to Liam tomorrow...Xac wrote:I've got an XUD they can use
They do look good Steve I do agree but then so does the Mazda... The interior of the Mazda is a very cool place indeed.myglaren wrote:Or just buy an FTO. They look better anyway.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the FTO I must admit...

The owner of the RX-8 is in fact building a Cobra kit-car with hydropheumatic suspension..
His choice of power for that one is the Rover V8 - an engine that definitely won't fit in an RX-8...
Over on Club-XM it's been suggested that the RX-8 be converted to electric propulsion. Thinking about the Tesla that idea has some considerable merit...
I'll see if I can find Liam a scrap milk float to provide the motive power... Or even a mobility scooter...

No, not at all Chris... This is being seriously looked into. We'll know more later todayCitroenmad wrote:I thought you were joking about fitting an ES9!![]()
Yes, the FTO might be a good fit, 2.0 V6 isnt it?
Yes, as far as I know the FTO is a 2.0 V6 and a lovely little thing too. Sounds like nectar

As I think I said before, I looked at these very closely before deciding against one a couple of years ago. You'd be surprised Jim, the engines often go spectacularly. The chaps at Rotechniks don't rebuild them in the dead ones they buy to fix and sell on - factory fresh, new Mazda motors go in all of them.CitroJim wrote:That's the thing Chris. They're not really bargains... Lovely cars but you have to remember that the engines exist in a binary world: They're either expired or about to expire - there is no other state of existence for an RX-8 engineCitroenmad wrote:I've suddenly remembered why I have not taken advantage of the RX-8s bargain prices![]()

Even a tired one would cost getting on for a grand to restore...
To be fair though, I doubt very much all go as emphatically as Liam's has and I expect most would escape with just a new set of apex and side seals...
Lovely looking , sweet handling things. Utterly terrible engines though.

Re: Citrojim's Xantia and XM Tales
There is a C5 V6 on autotrader, might be the red one I can't remember now, with what must be 10 RX-8s in the background for sale. I wonder how many of them work and how many are about to expire

I wonder what (other than oodles of wonga!) would be needed to make a Diesel Wankel engine? The trick would be handling the pressures required to make it work.

Now THAT is an elegant solution to the pressure issue. It is a shame they could not complete the project;

Re: Citrojim's Xantia and XM Tales
As I say, the RX-8 engine exists in a binary state. It's either expired or about to. There is no other state of existence for it..
Shame as the RX-8 is otherwise a gorgeous little car...
The owner has made his decision and he's going to invest in a replacement engine for it, a Renesis. This is allegedly (as I understand it) a later generation of the engine that has some improvements to allow it to live a longer life...
Actually, few die as emphatically as this particular one has. Most can be revived with just new seals which only costs a grand for a kit and takes about 2000 hours to rebuild the engine properly... Each seal has to be individually lapped in for best results...
There is good evidence that if the engine is looked after with great care they will last as long as any piston engine before needing a rebuild. It's neglect that kills them - nothing more... It's just that Wankels can tolerate no neglect whilst it's amazing just how much abuse and neglect a piston engine will take before it complains...
This weekend I'll be busy rebuilding the one in bits in my workshop so it can be traded in for a replacement...
Anyone wanting to know a bit more about the Wankel can find some good articles on Wikipedia. The ones discussing the advantages and disadvantages makes very interesting reading...

Re: Citrojim's Xantia and XM Tales
I don't believe this to be true. As I understand it, the Renesis is simply the 13B-MSP engine used in the all RX8s. It's more efficient and has lower emissions than the RX7 motor, but isn't really a great deal different -indeed, it has less power.CitroJim wrote:As I say, the RX-8 engine exists in a binary state. Weak coil packs kill them as do low oil levels.
I believe a new factory motor is in the region of £2500.
