GPS aerial has arrived today.

Might try and get that chucked in to place tonight if I can - off to the office tomorrow so would get the chance to find satellites then.

A little job once finished work today was curing this trailer of its noisy wheel bearings. Less than ten quid for four bearings two washers and two new hub nuts (which are just standard M10 Nyloc nuts) but better yet some entertainment for my eldest

Labelled hopefully will survive under here and make things easier if doing the job again in future. 36 Nm does not seem very tight at all!

I'll investigate the bearings which failed (suspect water ingress) hence wondering about stainless steel bearings (for next time)

36 Nm does not seem very tight at all!

Are they taper rollers Matt? If so, the quoted torque will be setting the correct preload. Do the hub nuts have a means of locking them? Staking? castle-nut with split-pin or similar?

Hi Jim,

No, it's very odd! These are both just deep grove ball bearings. Inner one is the larger, sits against a larger diameter shoulder on the stub axle.

The stub axle steps down in diameter and the outer smaller bearing sits on the reduced diameter. Not against a shoulder this time.
Finally the stub axle steps down again to the (little!) M10 thread to receive the Nyloc nut.

There's no sleeve sitting between the bearings, so nothing actually clamping the inner races in place.

Again, very odd - nope! Just the Nyloc nut clinging on for dear life!

Just tried to find an image on Google, I should have taken a photo as looks like no-one else ever has!

My "big trailer" is more conventional and as you describe Jim, a pair of tapered bearings facing one another, tightened against each other and a split pin through the castle nut. Which "feels right!" Versus the Erde / Daxara / Franc setup.


As far as I can make out, the inner bearing would pick up the cornering forces in one direction and the outer bearing when turning the other way - pushing against the washer behind that little Nyloc

Reads more of neglected bearings rather than an issue with the nut coming loose. Think I'll chalk this down as one of those "not broke so don't try to fix it" situations

As long as you always replace the nuts with new, the Nyloc should do the job Matt

Wow, two weeks past!

Now trial fitted, here:

I'm not sure how waterproof the aerial is (seems fairly well sealed)
Hopefully this is a good location to pick up the signals - boot lid is above it but mostly plastic.

Need to Diagbox and clear the "GPS short to earth" fault too.

Also had a go at the C5. Annoyingly the in tank pump doesn't look that easily retrofitted. I've now removed the engine driven high pressure pump, this has given me sight of its part numbers.

A quick Google/eBay search suggests it's shared with various Land Rovers including the "Ingenium" engines. As I understand it they go bang with a delightful frequency - I guess explaining why the pumps are common on eBay and as little as £60.
Not clicked But it now just yet, wondering about digging into my current pump.
