The thing that many people find hard to understand is that the main point for me is the driving, rather than the site seeing, but it is good to have a reason to do the driving rather than just go out for 200 mile drives each day just for that!! We have initial plans for a trip which will increase that mileage quite a lot so watch out for that!!

I completely understand your sentiment, Mick. Back in the day I travelled many miles around the UK doing random survey work and it was always pleasant to be able to drive for pleasure and for a reason.

I don't find this hard to understand. I'm exactly like that. It's why I choose to drive to the South of France, or Spain, or Athens. I love the experience of driving in different countries too. Bogota is completely insane. Mallaig is not.. etc...

Mick and I are totally complementary in that I'm not keen on driving great distances but love sightseeing and visiting new places

And gosh! did I see some sights on this trip

And some surprises too... One of the biggest was just how big cruise liners such as the Queen Mary III are

I always thought they were just a bit larger than a cross-channel ferry and not the size of a small town! I really was properly shocked!

Same as Mrs. Michel and I, she loves to see places. Hates driving. Works perfectly.

I am really pleased you had a good trip - the photos are great and certainly show how much you packed in!

In my experience a road trip with a friend (or several

) is always great fun!

One of the very significant of the many highlights of the Saunter was our visit to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway

There, I fell in love with a little visiting locomotive called Sian - perhaps because she shares her name with my youngest daughter... They both share a common attribute - they're both beautiful

Since then I've been following her adventures on Facebook and yesterday I was delighted to see a small feature about her in this month's Steam Railway magazine

The RHDR is now more or less closed for the year - except Christmas specials - but do try to visit when it repoens. It really is quite magical
