Re: Davie's french attraction.
It's horrible cheap and nasty. The 35 Mike run home from the garage that is remapping the 407 was very bouncy and uncomfortable, very slow and only 38 mpg on its trip computer. It's a shopping trolley. I'd rather just sit in a Tesco shopping trolley towed by a French car. Bound to be more comfy!

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Shauns mk1 fabia isnt bad, comfier than this basic one which is mk3 i think. Put it this way i would have a mk1 vrs myself, but no way would i have this one. Speaking of shauns one its booked in for MOT on Saturday, at long last he has it fixed up after crashing it last year then blowing its turbo. That will free up the 107 for me to use for deliveries. The Leon is still here, was supposed to be collected last night but the guy never appeared. Im not caring, i have a 50 quid non returnable deposit! If he doesnt collect he loses 50 quid unless he has a really good reason lol

Re: Davie's french attraction.
It's so bloody annoying when a buyer fails to show Davie and I hope he/she/it will very soon...
Another reason why I never sell cars now except to people I know well.. Same with buying them...
All far too much aggro...
Still, looking on the bright side, you'll be £50 up and maybe on a resell you can make a better price of it

At least being German, you know it'll get you there without breaking down.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Unless they've come a long way since the last one I drove (11 plate I think, Fabia 1.4FSi), you'll be disappointed.
Initially surprised by the number of toys, until I started to get annoyed at how much they get in the way of actually driving, and realising how rubbish an engine is propelling the thing. Despite being a 1.4 with supposedly nearly double the horsepower of the 107 I found the Fabia I drove always felt sluggish compared to the 107. Big difference being that the 107 loves to rev, the Fabia on the other hand really didn't want to entertain anything north of 3500rpm. ...Was like driving an old school diesel...But without the low end torque. Handling was a let down as well, especially given how harsh the ride was.
Was a bit of a shame as obviously I've a bit of brand loyalty to them...Still reckon though that the best Skoda I've ever driven was a Favorit. Only criticisms I had really was that the steering was nearly Lada heavy when parking, and as with most cars back then the dash layout was dictated by chaos theory rather than science. Otherwise it went well, handled lovely, rode nice and having been largely overseen by VW (but still a 100% Skoda design, as with the first gen Felicia), was pretty well put together.

Re: RE: Re: Davie's french attraction.
Isn't the 1.4 just an updated version of the awful and asthmatic VW 1.4 engine from aeons ago? An old girlfriend had one in a M or N plate Golf, it was awful!Zelandeth wrote:Unless they've come a long way since the last one I drove (11 plate I think, Fabia 1.4FSi), you'll be disappointed.

I had a Felicia Estate for a while, it was actually a decent motor. A T-plate 1.6. It's roly-poly handling made the Berlingo look stiffly sprung

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Well the remap did not happen. It wouldnt work via the obd port, they then removed the ecu to try directly, that did not work either. The garage i chose is an agent for Quantam remaps. It is all done over the internet. The storeman told me this when i went in for my car at 5pm. He said dont tell the bosses but you are lucky it did not work, and you were not charged a penny for the attempts. Quantam is not the best and we actually get a few complaints and put them back to standard and refund the customers.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
I woke the 205 up today, its been sleeping inside for a while. I thought i would give it a run. It started instantly and ran perfectly to Aberdeen and back. Between Aberdeen and here is Inverurie, or more specifically Thainstone motor auctions, which is on Mondays and Thursdays. So guess where i went lol. Im always looking for a bargain. I was sitting on my hands more than once. If the Leon was sold i would have bought something. There was a very nice c3 exclusive 1.6hdi, yes the eat their turbo one, 06 plate, one owner, full Duthies of Montrose service history. They are one of the best reputation citroen dealers there is. The history included a timing belt less than a year ago. Just over 110k on the clock and a reasonable mot the hammer fell at £260 conditional sale. That would have made a great delivery car! Even if it ran a year then blew its turbo lol. I will mention Vauxhall since they are now french lol. 3 or 4 tidy vectras between 55 and 58 plate, not abused crap, not high mileage, not one of then over 600 quid. A job lot of 6 berlingo vans all from the same company, all 1.6 hdi, all between 56 to 58, around 100k to 120k, cheapest 450 dearest 580 +VAT. Cheap vans. And most interesting for me a Seat Altea 1.9tdi 55 reg, 150k a bit rough around the edges, unsold at 1150! Compared to the vauxhalls, fords, et all that shows the stupid prices that VAG diesels sell for up here. I think I may well stick my leon in on Thursday or next Monday. It has a rattly DMF so if it goes in auction there is no comeback on me.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Ah, Thainstone...Miss that place.
That's where my yellow Metro came from. Taxed and tested, 17K on the clock, started at £100 as I recall, then dropped to £50 after no bids, before finally "Somebody give me £2..." and mine was the only hand that moved. I couldn't believe it. Think it was £26 or so after fees.
She was a cracking little motor, hardly any rust and one owner. Like a total fool I sold it a few years later. That's the single car I regret selling the most. Not likely to find another, you just don't see Mk I Metros any more...And if you do, they're silly money!
Me and a couple of friends were always going to go down there (this was back before the sub 200 quid car market tanked) with a budget of £100 or less to get a car, be given a £50 budget and a day to fettle the car - then go on a tour of the country in a (what would now be referred to as a Top Gear style) road trip. Sadly we never found time for it.
Wasn't at all uncommon for running cars with a short test needing very little work to go for £50 or less back then. Had to sit on my hands more than once!
Main ones I remember we're a mint looking Renault 11 1.5 that went for £20, a Renault 25 V6 needing a new rear window for a tenner, and one I very nearly bid on was a then pretty recent to me (this would have been around 2002-3) was an Astra 1.4 on an L plate - as I was actually looking for sensible daily transport at that point - but thought there had to be something amiss with it because nobody was interested.
Lovely deep metallic maroon colour, was loaded with all the options, no rust in sight, even the factory alloys were unmarked. Only things I spotted were that it would benefit from a set of front tyres and one of the hangers on the back box had snapped. It smelled and sounded like it had just left the factory. I nearly put my hand up, but bottled it.
Found it at the garage I worked at the following day...One of the guys there had bought it! Darn thing *was* mint (even the air con worked like new)...He ran it for six months, stuck a fresh test on it then sold it for £950 I think! He said he only stuck the cheeky bid (£50!) In as an aside and never expected to win it. Suffice to say he told me what he thought of my £200 answering offer!
I stopped going when the Scrappage scheme started and two things happened: the prices went nuclear, and everything that held any interest to me seemed to vanish overnight.

Re: Davie's french attraction.
Renault 25, nearly bought one once a 2.0 auto. Nice car but when I went to pick it up there was a fault on the box and it wouldn't select reverse. I bought a Rover 820 instead. BIG mistake! It cost a lot of money in repairs and I ended up part x ing it for a Skoda Favorit. An altogether much better car.[emoji3]
