Keep something with absolutely no redeeming features when it was new for long enough, people start getting all dewy-eyed AND - hey presto, it's a classic!

Two bog standard vehicles spotted today, both in white.

A Morris Minor, a common sight so no bonus points for rarity.

But, how often do you see a Ford Cortina Mk l? Just about worth 50 for an unusual spot! and a dip into the wiki gallery for a pic.

Spotted a GT5 Turbo at the weekend - I had to do a double-double-double-take as it looked brand spanking new!

No idea. It didn't have the rear arch intakes and looked a little more rounded at the edges if that makes a difference? Come to think of it, it might have been an H reg too.

Yes I corrected my post. The R5 Turbo 2 was a mid-engined beast requiring those air intakes.

Crap in their day, crap now but loved beyond all reason... Even I love them now and I hated them with a passion when they were current...

The one well-loved classic I have no time for is the Moggy Minor... Don't know why...

...Although the Traveller did have a certain charm, with something only the British could do - attach Anne Hathaway's cottage to the rear end.
I do remember an old Giles-type cartoon about these, featuring an anguished cry from an elderly husband to his wife: "Good grief, Edith, I think we've got woodworm in the Morris!"

One thing that never appealed to me about the Morris Minor/1000 was the painted dash, especially when finished in body-colour drab grey (one of Jim's least favourite colours).

Don't knock it it was a good enough car for its time and really all that the motorist needed or even now needs , no need for a Chelsea tractor for the 'single' mum to take the little darlings to school or to the food bank.

I don't do any dull colours Chris - I like my world to be bright and cheerful

Another colour I hate with some passion is the Almond Green that traveller has the misfortune to be painted in

Makes it even more 'Derby and Joan' Maybe the woodworm like it!

Good point well made Eric

I used to cart our two around quite happily in a 2-door AX when they were babies... There was sufficient room on the back seat for two baby seats - no more needed... And the act of getting a sleeping baby out of an AX without waking same did wonders for your fitness and flexibility

Wins all-round...

My mother bought a new 1000 traveller in 1963, £600 including undersealing. I quite liked it at the time but a few years ago a friend of mine bought a 1000 saloon and I took it for an MOT for him - what a dreadful car to drive!

I passed my driving test on my then GF's father's Morris 1000. It was either that, or the '35 Rover Ten (with a crash box). The Morris would pull away quite happily in 2nd, and on the test (a hill-less Ashford, Middx) the examiner asked me - just as a personal favour, you understand - whether I could do the next start in 1st, just to show him I could.

Was told that the characteristic farty noise from the exhaust every time you changed gear was the result of inlet and exhaust valve opening overlapping. Never did really understand that.

I don't know about that Chris but I do know it was bloody horrible... I think it's one thing that really puts me off them... Used to remind me of a naughty boy making rude noises with a pea-shooter...

I learned to drive in its successor - a 1.3 Marina

Hideous to drive but actually good looking in coupe form... It's stood the test of time well and if only was not based on Morris Minor underpinnings it could have been a very good car...
