Driving after dark without turning on the lights (even around town with street lighting). The worst example I have seen was a car traveling along the M4 from Bristol towards London without lights (although the DRLs were very bright). The only indication I had that they were there was my headlights reflecting from the rear reflectors and the number plate, as it was a dark coloured car.

It seems to me that a relatively simple cure for this issue is to have a daylight detector as part of the DRL system which turns on rear lights after dark!

My current car, non Citroen, VW group car, has a variation of this in that it progressively dims the instrument lights so they are completely out when it's dark until you switch on the lights. It can be irritating when you disagree with it over how dark it is but by and large it's very effective.

There's a separate thread about homemade or modified tools, but I think I once bought a special tool for things like this. Like a tapering socket with a screwdriver handle. Push it on to the washer or cap piece, whatever it's called, and turn it 90 degrees.

The problems I had with drum brakes were different.

On an old Triumph 2.5 PI, one of the back brakes was weak on test, and it turned out the slave cylinder was leaking. Removing the drums with a hired puller was made more complicated by the fact the shoes had worn down enough that the copper rivets had made slight grooves in the drum.

On a trailer made in Finland in the mid-70s, it was impossible to find the exact brake shoes and other parts. Moskvich might have been a guess possibility, but I bought Morris Minor shoes and partly cut the webs. Then I had to get my father to teach me heat treatment of the new pull-off springs I wanted to shorten.

A couple of years after I got it all that working again one of the brakes suddenly jammed on and I skidded into a convenient lay by, meeting my friends in the pub about 20 minutes late after taking the whole wheel apart and removing everything. One shoe had come lose, gone round, wedged against the internal auto-reverse mechanism and smashed out through the drum. I towed the trailer without brakes for a while after that.

I'll have to look back in the achives....I have probably deposited over-small bleed nipples in Room 101 before but today, specifically NIssan Micra K12 bleed nipples are going in. They are ridiculously small. Reminds me of my first Mini. I guess they are a 7mm hex, but a 7mm socket is too big, and a 6mm socket doesnt fit over the nipple bit of the nipple to get to the hex.

Never mind over-small bleed nipples, bleed nipples of any size need to go into Room 101. Yes the FCF even has a thread "ever sheared off a brake nipple".
