Too many posts to reply to individually... ;)

As Alex points out that car is an auction and bids are ongoing. It's gone up from £311 to £440 since yesterday, and given the low mileage I expect it to go a lot higher in the remaining 40 hours or so. I'm guessing it might go as high as £600 despite the panel damage because of its rare low mileage and "one elderly driver". (Albeit not a very careful one by the looks of it... )

Apart from the mileage we know nothing about it though. Bidding on and buying a car over 400 miles away without even seeing it is not my modus operandi, when buying a car I would always at least see it in person before handing over the money, even if I have to make an on the spot decision. (Which has usually been the case in the past)

That panel damage would annoy me quite a bit, and I know from past experience that I would never get around to fixing the damage - I drove this car with a huge gouge across the bonnet for 2 years and never did anything about it, I could see the same happening again if I had a car in that condition.

Small scratches and marks don't bother me (I really need to put some pictures up of my current one to show how bad it is!) but not huge scraps and gouges...rust and panel/paint work are two things that I simply don't like dealing with on cars - I'm definitely a mechanical/electrical person, NOT a body worker, and I have no interest or desire in learning to do panel repairs. I've tried to learn before and I just don't have the knack or inclination.

I'd far rather be fixing a hydraulic, mechanical or electrical problem, (provided it isn't major, like a gearbox or engine rebuild... ) To me stripping down, cleaning, reassembling and refitting/adjusting a height corrector is a fun satisfying job, while dealing with a rust hole or other panel work is just a chore.

General maintenance and repairs like brakes, suspension and so on don't bother me at all, neither does troubleshooting electrical systems.

So the eBay car doesn't appeal to me for a few reasons, too far away, pay before even seeing it, the bidding will probably take the price up to something I'm not willing to pay, panel damage which I know will annoy me every time I see the car but which I'll never get around to fixing, and just a lack of any knowledge about the condition of the car other than the mileage and a few exterior photos.

As Alex says we're also in the middle of trying to buy a house (we looked at a couple today) so organising all this is a bit inconvenient - should I win the auction I have only 7 days to arrange pickup. So as I said I'll pass on this one.

An Activa does tempt me but I'm well aware of their foibles and the large number of NFP parts that they need, it's just not the car for me at this moment, maybe later when I have room for two cars and/or somewhere to work on them properly. (An Activa makes even the V6 seem like a practical daily driver  )

We ran an Activa for nearly two years as a daily driver with hardly any problems at all. I replaced the spheres on it, cleaned the control rods and replaced the pump when it started to leak a lot. Other than that it did 45000 totally reliably before my missus smashed it up.

I too have run Activas as daily drivers in the past with no problems..

Remember, the ONLY Citroens ever to strand me at the roadside have been V6s - twice!!

Therefore on that basis the V6 is the most unreliable of the lot

To be serious for a moment (yeah right)

You could do a lot worse than a Laguna V6.........even as a stop gap.
They are cheap, more of them about and just as much fun as a Xantia.

Engine and gearbox as good. It only lacks the suspension.......but none of it's woes. Nice looking too.
I don't know if you guys have noticed...........they are also French

Out of interest Jim, what were the faults that let you down on those two occasions ?

Closest this one has come to letting me down is when the exhaust broke a mile from home...

Looking at the scratches on that eBay Xantia - the right rear scrapes appear to be entirely on the bumper so could be solved by finding a replacement silex grey bumper, leaving only the broken drivers wing mirror glass (which I'm guessing might be an MOT fail) and the scrapes down the left hand side.

Do any of you have any idea what those scrapes on the left hand side might cost to be fixed ? Just thinking aloud...

The left side has the scrapes on the doors mike, the right rear only appears to be on the plastic bumper ?

A decent body man should be able to sort that out with a skim of filler and a blow over for not a lot.

The ignition coil failed on what is now PavlosV6's and failed in such a way it was fine cold and ran only on four when hot. That happened 150 miles from home. A V6 running on four is undrivable.

The second was the recent one when the front hydractive leakage return pipe split at its tee into the main return line and it dumped its LHM...

Ah ok. Yes a faulty coil really does kill the performance dead and make the car un-drivable, I've had that problem myself on this one...the coil pack is definitely a weak point on this engine and its infuriating that all three are moulded together making diagnosis (by swapping individual coils) impossible.

The split LHM return line is bad luck though, any Xantia could have done that.

An update on that eBay listing - I've been talking to Trainman about taking up his offer to help get it at least part of the way up here and I think I'll place a bid! :)

I think I would regret it if I let it slip by...scratches or not its probably a cracker of a car at that mileage with one owner. I haven't worked out how high I'm willing to bid yet though, and I suspect there will be a bidding war tomorrow, but I'll at least give it a go.

Fingers crossed...

V6s seem more prone to that tee splitting though Simon...

Good luck in the bidding  Cosmetics are easier to sort out that a lot of mechanical things :)

Thanks Jim. By the way, will a S1 V6 have that annoying keypad immobiliser ? Any other differences from the S2 V6 I should be aware of ?

Yes, an S1 has the keypad Simon but can be taken out of use in the time-honoured way

The S1 is better in every respect than an S2. More stylish, no CPH and better seats.

The only thing I miss on a S1 is the automatic wipers... The thing I miss on an S2 is no aux in on the wireless

S1 speedos are far more accurate.

S2 lights have slightly fitter glow-worms in them.

The differences really are largely cosmetic although I much prefer the S1 style. To be utterly honest I'm no huge fan of the frontal styling of the S2. I know I have an early S2 but that was simply because of its provenance and not for any distinct S2 preference.

Be aware that few S1s had all the toys. Often they have no heated seats, sunroofs or headlight washers. None of these things are essential on an otherwise decent car.
