Well well well.....I decided to check the other side but this time I took off the wheel (no "wobble" detected), I spun the disk feeling for and drag or rumble__nothing. I popped off the hub sealing cap just to be sure and found a brown mess where water had got in and started rusting the bearing. So the other one needs changing as well !.....arrrrg !

I hope and trust you'll not find the same horrible mess on the stub axle threads Alasdair ...

The mess is off now......bearing is totally shot (how come this one was not screaming I do not know) and full of "brown".

The good news is the stub shaft is fine without damage or marks and with perfect threads.

Excellent news on the stub axle Alasdair :D

Odd that the bearing was in such a state but audibly OK...

Got any pictures of that one?

This one RIGHT is the one that was amazingly was giving zero sign of being close to failing despite looking like it had been sitting in the sea for a week !, the one on the LEFT was the one which I could detect as having a sight even rumble when spinning.

The Activa is still off the road. My initial thoughts regarding the state of the right rear stub axle was wrong. There was distortion at the thread end where it had "splayed" and formed a small "lip" due to probably being overtightened and this prevented the new outer race of the bearing seating correctly on the shaft. I have had to (to save the shaft) cut the complete new hub and races off as I did not want to damage the shaft to the point I had to replace another one.
I have with expert assistance cleaned up the "lip" that was formed and new hubs are due to be delivered.

Pi55ed off ?.....I should say so, not a good week what with this mess, add to that my Mother destroying her Kia by "kissing a tree" resulting in it going to the scrap yard with a bent suspension mount/subframe and a delivery firm who think dropping 1.2 tonnes of cast iron radiators at the bottom of a hill is "OK" because they could not be bothered to use a 7.5t truck and sent them on an 18t one !.....agggg.

(Mother is fine btw)

Thanks Jim....it has been a good one.

Add to that I had to tow a Land Rover home on Wed as its front diff exploded blowing a massive hole in the case and throwing bits all over the road. So been assisting (limited) with replacing the axle on that as well :)

The grass needs cutting and I have been suffering from a massed Squirrel attacks on the chicken feeder !

Now we can't have squirrels nicking the chickenfeed Alasdair!

Was that the same Land Rover you’ve been working hard on in the recent past?
