Earth's heat to power 10,000 homes in renewable energy first for UK
The UK's first geothermal power plant is set to go live, providing a completely new type of renewable electricity using hot water from underground.

On Thursday morning, the Cornish plant will be switched on after nearly two decades in development which required Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL) to drill the deepest on-shore well in the UK.

The water, super-heated by rocks, will help drive turbines to generate electricity for 10,000 homes, but will also provide the UK's first domestic supply of lithium - a critical mineral used in green technology.

The British Geological Survey said it was a "major step forward" for geothermal but high drilling costs could make replicating the project difficult.

Australia just created the world's longest solar installation — a continuous solar farm stretching 3,700 kilometers along the transcontinental railway line from Darwin to Adelaide, turning the most remote railway on Earth into a clean energy corridor powering every community it passes through.

The Ghan Solar Railway Corridor mounts elevated solar panel structures on both sides of the Adelaide to Darwin railway line across 3,700 kilometers of central Australian outback, installing 2.8 gigawatts of solar capacity along a transport corridor that was previously used for nothing except train passage twice per week. Solar panels elevated 4 meters above ground allow kangaroos and native wildlife to pass freely underneath while simultaneously providing shade that reduces track expansion in extreme outback heat, reducing rail maintenance costs by 23 percent annually. The railway's existing electrical infrastructure provides a ready-made grid connection backbone running the full length of the installation.

Remote communities along the Ghan route — including Alice Springs, Katherine, and dozens of Aboriginal communities — previously relied entirely on diesel generators trucked across hundreds of kilometers of unpaved roads. The solar corridor delivers clean electricity to all 47 communities within 50 kilometers of the railway line for the first time, at electricity costs 78 percent lower than previous diesel generation prices. Aboriginal community councils negotiated land use agreements covering the corridor installation, receiving annual payments that provide the largest income stream most communities have ever accessed.

The project proves that existing linear infrastructure across remote regions represents an untapped solar resource available in every country with long railway networks crossing sunny terrain.

When a Swiss startup announced it was installing solar panels between active train tracks and letting trains run over them all day, the critics said it wouldn't work. 14 months in and it's still working fine.

Sun-Ways installed 48 removable solar panels along a 100-meter stretch of working railway in Buttes, Switzerland in April 2025. More than 11,000 trains have rolled over them at speeds up to 55 mph. Zero incidents so far.

The panels haven't shifted or broken. They haven't gotten too dirty to work. The glare concern that critics raised, that reflected sunlight would blind train drivers, hasn't materialized.

The panels sit between the rails, low enough to clear the trains, and disconnect from both the track and the power grid in about ten minutes when maintenance crews need access.

The pilot has generated more than 16,000 kilowatt hours since May 2025, enough for three to four Swiss households. That's a small number, and it was always going to be. The pilot was never about the wattage. It was about proving the mounting hardware survives.

And it has. France's national rail operator SNCF has signed a cooperation agreement to study the data. South Korea has approved its own pilot. Italy is in discussions. Indonesia sent a delegation to see it in person.

Switzerland's full rail network, excluding tunnels and poorly lit stretches, could theoretically generate enough solar energy to power 300,000 households and create hundreds of jobs, all without taking up one more square foot of land.
