The river flows underneath. The bridge is all iron spanning the gap with stone abutments at each side.
You can just see the top of one bottom right of this pic.

Thanks - now it makes sense. I'm not used to a bridge deck growing grassNewcastleFalcon wrote: 02 May 2024, 17:30

Pretty white/yellow/red colour when installed!
Just in case folk don't know what you are going on about Matt!, or aren't diligent re-readers of the thread the rest of my "quote"
Oh, quite right - I deliberately tightly cropped the quote so as to put up an interesting video. There's some footage of Fred Dibnah doing some hot rivets somewhere, with a much noisier pneumatic hammer type rivet tool - will see if I can find it tooNewcastleFalcon wrote: 17 Aug 2024, 13:26Just in case folk don't know what you are going on about Matt!, or aren't diligent re-readers of the thread the rest of my "quote"![]()

(Northern Echo)Work to redevelop Whorlton Bridge, near Barnard Castle, is ongoing following the completion of initial preparatory works.
Whorlton Bridge closed in 2019 after an assessment found it was not safe for vehicles or pedestrians.
The historic bridge opened 193 years ago and is recognised as a nationally important archaeological site. It is also believed to be one of the UK’s oldest road suspension bridges.
