Re: Computer operating systems
Talking of taste and sense, have any of you tried the new Google Nose feature they're testing at the moment?
Not much use to me as I'm anosmic, but check it out

Dragging this back to operating systems, I was reading this morning of a Linux powered sniper rifle.

They originally tried running it under Windows but it kept shooting the marksmen in the foot...myglaren wrote:Dragging this back to operating systems, I was reading this morning of a Linux powered sniper rifle.
I reckon Google Nose will be a reality in a few years...

Re: Computer operating systems
I heard that on a couple of occasions (when Windows glitched) the rifles shot the shooter either in the shoulder or the back of the head (there was no logical reason for this, but who said Windows was logical!).

Thats a Windows only feature... In the Linux world you're probably looking at something like "Colonel Panic"!Xac wrote:Brings new meaning to the phrase "blue screen of death"

Re: Computer operating systems
Raring Ringtail out tomorrow Jim.
I'll wait a few days before installing though.
Quantal Quetzal is fine on the desktop machine and the old Toshiba laptop but didn't seem too happy on the Asus laptop, would go into a tailspin every couple of months, didn't like the graphics processor by the looks of it.
Installed Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" and all is well. I quite like Nadia (used to have "Gloria" a while back).
Also installed it on my son's Toshiba laptop and he loves it. Much faster and less problematic than Windows. Takes 50" to boot and be usable. Windows took at least 15' to boot and another 20' to be usable in any reasonable degree.

Something seriously wrong with your Windows installation Steve if it took that long!myglaren wrote: Also installed it on my son's Toshiba laptop and he loves it. Re: Computer operating systems
It has been getting slower and slower for ages. It (and mine bought at the same time) is seven years old. His only has 1Gb RAM so it is no flying machine.
I spent a day reinstalling/updating and although it was faster it was still struggling then wouldn't install Libre Office so I threw in the towel and put Mint on it - a twenty minute install that came complete with Libre office.

Re: Computer operating systems
Just carried out a clean install of Rampant Rabbit (Ubuntu 13.04) from DVD onto my old laptop and it installed faultlessly. In fact I'm posting this from the laptop now..
The iso image is now too big for a CD and has to be written to DVD.
It all seems very smooth and no issues yet found...
I'm not convinced it's got anything new to or compelling that makes me want to go mad and upgrade the desktops from 12.04 LTS though...
I was intrigued to see that Canonical really do try to get you to kake a donation to Ubuntu when you download... I just might...

Re: Computer operating systems
I upgraded the Zoostorm desktop and the Toshiba laptop yesterday (online upgrade).
It all went smoothly and reasonably quickly. I did back up my files on the desktop but there was no need. Forgot to do it on the laptop, fortunately no damage done.
I'm keeping Mint Nadia on the Asus laptop for now - that upgrades a month after Ubuntu.
There is a bug, though. My BTYahoo account on Firefox checks for new mail every couple of seconds but if I try to access filtered mail in any of the assigned folders, it returns to the inbox as it checks for new mail so no time to read any of it.
As a quick and dirty workaround I deleted all the filters so all mail lands in the inbox and can be read and sorted manually.
I might get it picked up by one of the Gmaill accounts or the other Yahoo account that I only use in Chromium.
Which leads to another bug, apparently. Lots of folks are unable to install Chromium into 13.04. I haven't had this problem as it was already there on all three machines and was unaffected by the upgrade.
I usually wait a week or so for the bulk of users to upgrade but thought I would let the desktop do it's thing while I pottered about cleaning. When that was OK I did the Tosh to see if the 32-bit version had the same bug - which it did.
I actually read some of the release notes for Nadia yesterday and noted that it warned Samsung laptop owners not to install as it could brick machines with the UEFI module.
The differences are rather subtle, as with the previous upgrade to Quantal Quetzal, but I quite like them.
