It is a long time since I last removed a gearbox but it was on a Saab 9000 and a big heavy thing. I used an engine crane to lower it down onto some thick cardboard so it could then be slid out from under the car. If you are going to use long bolts without the bolt head to slide the gearbox sideways, I would cut slots into the ends of them so a screwdriver can undo them. Threaded bar might work just as well and can be bought from places like Toolstation.

Well guys, summer is here, exams are over for me and after monday to thursday 5-9 (sometimes earlier like this evening) after my 9-5 we are half way there to my clutch and flywheel. C5 is nicely supported, nearly everything is loose/stripped and I am now ready to remove the RHS driveshaft then only 4 subframe bolts and the gearbox to come out. So far a few heads needed grinding off and bolts needed extracting but nothing (yet lol) that will be a deal breaker, but I digress. I have just finished up outside with said RHS driveshaft half way out but cant get the rest out. I removed the little clip that holds the bearing in the housing and its out of the hub, but it wont pull out. The bearing and shaft is a little rusty, and granted I haven't hit it hard yet, only gently with a small hammer and a steel drift but can't get it out. It's really stuck. Have I missed something? is there a way I should do this specially, could I in a pinch just remove the reaction link piece and pull the axle out the box. Any advice/suggestions/techniques appreciated.

Thanks,

Helio

Hey guys, so summer is here n exams (for me) are over so back from work after 5 and bang away with the C5. After this week's evenings working on her, I am nearly there with removal, only half a driveshaft & recation link before I drop the box. Thanks for all the advice so far, but need one more piece! At the moment, I am stuck on the RHS driveshaft. Left one was ok if a little hard because the frip joint was very hard for some reason, but nothing trickier than drievshafts I've done before! I have removed the bearing clip off the right hand side and sprayed it down with WD, but the bearing is pretty stuck and looks rusty. It rotates ok and no noise, just seems stuck fast in its housing. I just got onto that as I finished last night, the CV joint is out of the hub side, so it's free to come out, but won't move. I grabbed a hammer and cut n ground a length of steel as a small blunt punch, Granted, I didn't hit it hard, but even so, it didn't move out of the housing at all and I am starting to worry. Can I hit it harder? Can I remove the complete reaction link and axle assembly as one (yes I know v tight for spanners)? Anything I have missed? Any advice/techniques appreciated if you have any.

Thanks,

Helio

This topic is discussed time and again.
The floor assembly of the C5 X7 is similar to that of the C6 - only the C6 is even heavier - and the service hotline has corresponding instructions.

The jacking points at the front are only suitable for on-board jacks - the rear is OK (less weight).
