This is indeed a DW8 engine, these are very reliant on glow plugs for starting, if they are not working you will struggle to start the engine at all. However if this was a glow plug issue using easy start should have bypassed them, once it started with the easy start i would not have expected it to cut out after 10 seconds like it did & i would have expected it to be able to start off the key again until the engine fully cools down.
Is the vacuum operated butterfly in the air intake staying fully open when you try & start it?

Generally a dashboard lamp, often orange... Also, many give a continuous bleep if you try to start with the immobiliser still armed.

They're very quiet and buried under the armour... I'd be very surprised if you can but worth a go with an improvised stethoscope (a long screwdriver with the handle held to the ear) resting against the delivery end of the pump.

There is a fat plastic tube running away from the rectangular air filter box. I looked inside that once and I don't recall seeing any butterfly in that. If any of the couplings further along can be undone without destroying them I will investigate further.

If it ever stops raining for long enough I will get out there and start digging deeper now that you guys have given me some ideas.
Absolutely hate modern cars and being ripped off by garages that play parts roulette.

It may not have it as its an older model, I think it may be the DW8B that has the butterfly in the intake.
