Daytime Running Lights

As DRLs became a legal requirement in February 2011 in the UK you vehicle being built 19th Dec 2011 will be covered as a requirement.

I suppose as they currently work on full brightness in the day they would pass this part. It's all a matter of if the tester fails them when he checks the main dipped or main beam switching and sees the one not working....

According to the MOT regs, they will only be testing them for cars first registered from March 2018, so you will be fine if this is the case!

What about when sidelights are on, only one drl comes on in this case. Do you think that would be a fail? I’m not to concerned about getting it fixed more the fact that it could fail an MOT, because only 1 works in sidelight mode. Also am I right when thinking the sidelights in the main unit don’t work as they did in my old petrol Picasso 2008.

As they are not testing DRLs for this year, as stated, you can ignore them completely IIRC.

Sorry for the confusion, does this mean there will be no issue when they test the sidelights? Even though only one works. The DRL that is?

That is my understanding as the DRLs can be ignored. As long as your main beams and dipped beams work and sidelights if fitted.

Thank you, I’m I right in assuming that the side lights in main unit do not work, even though they are there and have bulbs in them?

Scrub that - the terminology refers to them as 'position lights', so are mandatory.

Best to have a look at this document for the test, as It should have everything in it. The terminology is well antiquated in a lot of places though IMO.

As you said before only mandatory checks on cars who have them from 1st March 2018.

I was thinking more of the side lights - and if this is what they are referring to as 'position lights'.

I had a fail on 'position lights'. Incandescent bulbs would only last a few weeks. Bunged some rubbish (very blue) LEDs in and they lasted until the car went to the bean tin factory, several years.
Never used on their own but as long as they were capable of visible illumination when required then they were a pass.

Just an update, I replaced the light with another and the same thing is happening. So I am none the wiser of.
