Thanks Pete,

To my surprise, very much different than my previous 306. Alternator didn't pivot in that, was tensioner pulley on a sliding bracket, between alternator and crank pulley from memory.

Its off.
Took a short length of wood and a nylon hammer to the large underside bolt lug and gently tapped upwards on the alternator body and it freed itself from the build up of crap around the lug hole and the bolt, also had to release the bonnet lock bash plate a wee bit to allow a bit more room for the alternator to get out upwards.
So , thanks for all your help and advice .
Never done a 205 xud before , bit of a weird set up compared to the old British cars .

Is it a narrow single vee or a wide multi-vee belt?

To answer, if it's a narrow single-vee then around 10mm of deflection in the middle of its lower run, if a multi (PK-type) then a bit tighter, say 5mm deflection.

Don't over-tension...

If the belt squeals when under heavy load - discharged battery and all electrics on - then it's not quite tight enough...
