The DPF system used by PSA is one of the most efficient systems out there. The engine ECU detects when fuel may of been added to the tank. It calculates the reading of the fuel gauge when the engine is switched off and again when the vehicle is started. Some vehicles may have a fuel cap opening detection system, which also tells the engine ECU that fuel may of been added.

Once it determines that fuel has been added and how much, it instructs the additive pump to inject the relevant amount of Eolys into the fuel tank.

As the DPF becomes clogged up with soot, the filter will need regenerating.

Your vehicle will either do this passively (on a good run when exhaust gas temperatures are at about 550 °C, or through assisted regeneration, which it does through post injection to increase the exhaust gas temperature and may also switch on power consuming equipment like the heated rear windscreen to put the engine under load and may also the glow plugs to help raise temperature. The Eolys fluid in the fuel lowers the temperature at which the particles burn off to about 450 °C.

Here's one on the system a few years back which should explain:

Sooooooo what's that part? I only ask as outlet had a big puff of smoke when I disconnected it before I refilled the system.

Mine did a regen not long after it was topped up , i was driving along all hot it was with lovely white steam looking stuff flying out the tail pipe, then when i got home i was greeted by a twonk opposite me shouting out f...... diesel cars.. blah blah other stuff, then i was threatened to have a punch in the eye by same person.... then same person breaks down a week later in his little Citroën & comes and asks me for help !!!
Cannot repeat what i told this person to do as ill be banned for life from this place.
Well done again refilling your tank , saved yourself a good few quid there main dealers cost a bomb.

If he means the circled part in his previous post, then that is the additive pump attached to the additive tank.

From memory two pipes one goes up to the top of the tank the other goes further up , was over a year ago now, Marc may well have a diagram of this system id like to see it for myself as its a clever design. Marc where are you

Yeah theres 2 pipes but that's it, no electrical connection or anything to say it's a pump of some sort.

Stop panicking!

The electrical connection is at the opposite end. :hb:

Here, where I've marked in yellow arrow

Its in such position you can't see if you look for it, my unit has a plate over it so all you really see is the pipe/filling end. Hes a bit like me blind panic till the fog clears, or regen clears lol.
Im just wondering now how long this setup will be made illegal due to climate change, using more chemicals to clear other chemicals can't be good.

Eolys is an iron-based substance, and it is this element that cannot be burned off during regeneration, so gets retained in the filter and ultimately leads to the clogging along with ash and other engine debris. It's another reason why a clean won't restore the filter back to its original condition. If you look at the parameters in Diagbx / Lexia, you will see under the engine management data that it records how much Cerine (additive) has been dumped into the filter over time in units of weight. This is estimated from the amount of additive that has been metered, and this relates to the message you may get about the particle filter needing changing / end of service life.

The C4's particle filter had an estimated 75k mile service life
The 2005 C5 MK II's particle filter (along with later models) was modified to an octagonal structure with larger input channels at the expense of outlet channels and provided a 112K mile service life. This has been extended again on the later X7 to about 120k miles with checks then needed every 20k miles under normal driving conditions.
