One other point, sometimes the final two characters are numbers and not letters. You still have to knock them off to find the RPO number though.
For information, these final two characters indicate the factory where the vehicle was built. There's a (very) abbreviated list of factories here https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/wiki/ORGA/RP_Number .
