If you are only going for 2-3 mile journeys as an example, then a diesel with DPF is not the right car for you. There are other earlier diesels without DPFs, like our C3 1.6 HDi that we still get 60 MPG out of. We use that for shorter return journeys to the village and leave the C5 for longer journeys. But I bought all my DPF-enabled C5s knowing about them first having researched them. I wanted a 2.0 HDi engine not the troublesome 1.6 and all those had DPFs, so I knew full well in advance.

Assisted regeneration lowers the combustion temperature down from 550°C to 450°C and has strategies for ensuring regeneration - but if it is never going to get to at least 450 °C, then it will never be able to undertake regeneration, unless you do a forced regeneration - which is not recommended any more than necessary.

Considering it is about the cost of 2 tanks of fuel to replace the DPF, it's not excessive - but without knowing your circumstances / journeys, you would obviously have been better with a non DPF version or a petrol model if you only do short journeys.

Good your spreading this knowledge so others might avoid getting stuck in this dilemma. I wish I knew all about it before it was too late to afford to sell and get a petrol or older diesel.

Long journeys only happens in the mid of summer. And in rest of the year I only do 5-10minutes of highway speed. Working as a fireman I occasionally have to do non preheated cold starts that tend to be a killer for both FAP and EGR. Winther temp around -20~30° is not uncommon. Sometimes we hit -40° here in the mountains.. Something not all electric cars can handle either..
