Who said 17inch wheels are "to modern" ?

I was quite surprised my Xantia had 15", given its age & size. Certainly 17's would be too modern for some (many?) of its contemporaries - but much depends on style & tyre profile. The Yanks are ahead of us in this, they're putting anything up to 22's on almost anything post-war (although some do look ridiculous).

It used to be the case that they did everything possible to reduce the unsprung weight, surely the adding of bigger wheels defeats that.
As for 17" being too modern that was the norm on the old Ford Anglias and Pops, 16" on the Prefects and 18" on the Ford 10 vans.

And the 16" and 17" are lighter?

Tyre weight usually decreases as profile shrinks, so combined wheel+tyre weight needs to be taken into account.
Large wheels normally bring with them low-profile tyres. For hydropneumatic Citroens, this does absolutely nothing to improve ride quality, where the cushioning of the tyre is an integral part of the suspension design. Those of us who have ridden on OE Michelins and their successors over the years know just what a difference these tyres (with their supple walls) can make, when not over-inflated.
Riding around on rubber bands might be thought to look cool, but it does nothing for ride comfort (especially in potholey UK), nor for being able to take uneven bends at speed, where, for example, a decently shod Xantia or XM will leave much German stuff simply unable to maintain adhesion and control, and open-mouthed at the composure with which the French saloon can disappear.

225/45/7 have not "affected" the ride other than improve the feel of the steering, better traction and grip.
I have not noticed any noticeable difference to the comfort to be honest, I expected it but it has not changed.
I accept the damage to this wheel "may" have not happened with 60 profiles.....but it did with my original alloys when I hit a similar sized bit of unsecured debris from a truck.

Will 16" Peugeot 207 alloys fit the Xantia?
