The link you posted is for the Glasgow Film Theatre, which is an old theatre that shows indy films and special showings. I have no idea what size screen it has but I don't think it is as large as the normal theatres like Showcase or Cineworld.

...although it was originally shot on 70mm stock, for CinemaScope screening...

I don't know why but I thought it was Cinerama. It was certainly very wide screen.

Somewhere at home I have the LP of the music from the film that I had to specially order at the time. I also had (I hope it's still around somewhere) the programme that you could buy to accompany the film showing.

Just back from the showing here.

The detail in the sets and such you see on the big screen is mind boggling...even the buttons on the control panels and user instructions on stuff make sense...

Some of the effects now I look at them, I really can't see how they managed to pull it off with the technology of the day...

While it's different...dated? No...I don't think so really.

The last half hour though, nope...still can't make any more sense of it than I could when I first saw it.

Could really just spend hours going over all the set details...

Thank God for the follow up (2010 The Year We Make Contact) - which although wasn't as grand as the original sets wise, had an ending we could understand. From the story point of view of the original 2001, I'm still as disappointed as I am after watching it about 6 times - makes no sense to me at all. At least now I know why HAL went doolally - although if I had a HAL or SAL 9000, I would have to fix that whole 'I know what's best' autonomy subroutine pretty quick.

I have to admit that I do have HAL announcing when I have a new Message - and that's all I permit him to do!

I used to have him saying "I'm sorry, I can't do that..." as the error message on my computer many years ago.

Until one night when I left something running overnight and forgot to turn the stereo off.

It scared me half to death when I was woken from being half asleep by HAL's voice announcing that at something like 3AM.

...I changed that sample after that!

I really do need to get 2010...only think I've seen it once.

As for the plot? I couldn't care less really...I would gladly go and watch the thing again because the attention to detail makes the whole space part so immersive.

It must have been mind blowing from that perspective in the day. Especially given how new the whole space exploration thing was back then.

I always enjoy something that can really draw you in in that way, probably why I read the Martian in one sitting. Started reading and then couldn't put the blasted book down!

Yes the effects were pretty good and like most of the good films - no CGI to make everything look plastic. I recall the bit in the early part of the space flight with the space hostesses with the tea cosies on their head, trundling along with their trays and then walking up the wall into the next section. That was quite entertaining, as was the hamster cage rotating about in space. I said it before - that's why they got him on the fake moon landings - and all the clues he put into 'The Shining' about it!

Arthur C. Clarke was a brilliant author. He worked out his plot lines well, and the attention to detail was (as with Stanley Kubrick) painstakingly exact.

Indeed. I think the "Rama" series is an excellent example.

I think I had a dabble with those books in my very early years - and with those Foundation books by Isaac Asimov IIRC - but I never got into them enough to complete them.
