Ted,
If you are on good terms with a main dealer, they may provide the code for free. I'm lucky the parts manager has got used to me coming in for parts for the Xantia and I often didn't need to provide the V5 or a deposit for some of the more costly parts.

Re: Xantia s2 RF type remote key
Again, I have to advise against the advice to use the Lexia. Not only is it not required for remote re-synching, the Lexia learning-key process itself erases ALL current key transponders from the BSI before learning afresh. ie, get it wrong (unlikely, but Murphy's Law exists) and you can't start the car!
Take a look at this video of programming keys to a Peugeot and pay particular attention to the text @5:23 regarding how to program the HF remotes and the warning about anti-scanning protection. Lexia is not needed to accomplish and cannot re-synch the remote. "This procedure can be used at any time and without using diagnostic equipment"

Re: Xantia s2 RF type remote key
Both the videos above are for BSI equipped cars, the xantia 2 uses a CPH & the key coding is slightly diffenent. On a BSI equipped car the syncing of the remote is done after the key coding & Lexia doesent ask how many remotes there is.
When you code keys & remotes on a CPH equipped car Lexia asks you up front how many keys & remotes there are & programs them as part of the key coding procedure.
Sometimes using lexia is the only way to get them working again if they become un syncronised, I would say key coding with Lexia is fairly low risk, even if the process is interrupted or fails you can just repeat it again.

very much reflects my experience. I have had that happen... A bit bum-clenching initially but it all came good

Re: Xantia s2 RF type remote key
Yep I've coded the keys on a CPH Xantia a few times and never had any difficulty - just make sure you have the 4 digit code and ALL of the keys and fobs at hand as any time you code the keys any keys that are not coded will be removed.
But you can repeat the process as many times as you like with a CPH system as nothing is written to the fob or key itself, so if you forgot to include one key you can just do it again with all keys on hand.
Check afterwards that all keys can start the car! To check properly you must lock the car and leave it for at least 5 minutes between testing each key's ability to start the car as the system "caches" a recently presented transponder chip for a few minutes, meaning that a key that has not been programmed will be able to start the car for a few minutes after a programmed key was used.

Re: Xantia s2 RF type remote key
Well a good clean with Servisol and toothbrush failed to produce a result. The plip is definitely transmitting so I'm puzzled why the handbook procedure for re-initialising doesn't work, it did the last time I replaced the battery several years ago.
Next step will be a visit to the local dealer to see if I can get the relevant code. It's curious that the Citroen code
card that came with the car has the following sections: Ignition key, Remote control, Radio security code and Anti
theft code. The only sections filled in are for the ignition key and radio code.
Thanks all for the information and comments so far, I'll post again soonish.
