I've been a mechanic for 45 years now, and have seen this problem only twice. Once on a mk 3 Cortina and once on a Daf 33 van (!), so not recently. It's incredible that it can happen at all in this day and age.

Yes, but I suppose as the lock mechanism was damaged it's still a possibility... As yet we've still not heard back whether the damage was due to wear & tear or physical abuse/attempted theft etc.
If the former then there is a case for bringing it up with the relevant authorities but if the latter then it's just "one of those things" and could equally happen to any vehicle suffering similar damage no matter how new or old.
