You are right, the protruding part of the clutch plate does face the gearbox.
The technical department at Valeo got back to me today via e-mail, after I had fitted it of course, to confirm the way to fit it. It fits as per the diagram Marc attached.
The gearbox is back on, nearside driveshaft back on, just the offside shaft to fit and then hopefully all will be well.
After the pain that the job is to do hopefully the clutch will outlast the car now !
