Non working handbrake on C5 can also be caused by the cables being rusted into the guides. Another great fun job to complete....

The guides on the xant look past their best, but I need a good run up to get it done as it looks a pig!!! They look like they've rubbed against the loops.

Different set up Stu - Xantia has individual cables that run to an equaliser on the side of the exhaust tunnel, and have outers all the way, with a third cable running into the car. C5s just have the two cables, but the rear half have no outer - they run in guide tubes fitted to the car. Trouble is the guide tubes ship water and the cables rust into them, rendering them impossible to get out - so you have to change the tubes as well, which is a right pig. Xantia handbrake cables are surprisingly easy to change!

I have recently had mine done and got them to pack the guide tubes with grease to inhibit the corrosion.
Only time will tell if it works though.
Calipers were shot to hell too.
